Same day discharge

Following receiving my diagnosis of endometrial cancer on 5th March, I now have my surgury date for 2nd June.

My grade is 1 and told from MRI that it is early stage. The surgury is hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo oophorectomy.

I am having laparoscopic surgury and told today this will be done at day surgury with discharge the same day.

I am quite surprised that discharge will be the same day as was told it is considered major surgury. I am worried about pain control and generally managing after such a short stay.

Please can anyone help with my worries or share their experiences of same day discharge please?

  • I would have LOVED to have been discharged same day - might have got some sleep then! My hospital was planning to start offering same day later that year. They’ll only discharge you if they’re confident that you’re well enough and happy to go home. It’s worth asking if you would be discharged with or without a catheter. Re pain relief, I had no pain once my catheter was out and didn’t need any pain relief at all.

  • My hospital also offers same day discharge but I was kept in overnight. That was reassuring for me.  I was discharged the next early afternoon after walking to the coffee shop in order to get a second cup of coffee.

  • Next day for me too and very little pain from laparoscopic surgery and no internal pain at all which I still find miraculous! Only pain was in the shoulders from the air that is added to abdomen ( to separate organs?) and I am not sure if there is much to be done for that but although severe, does go after a day or two .
I found the horrible bright strip lights left on all night awful, together with a lady on her phone late so perhaps an argument for being home in your own bed ? Catheter removed around 6 am less than 24 hours after op. Hope this helps .
you will be so looked after and the op very routine for the surgeon .

  • I was discharged same day about 7 pm. Only paracetamol for pain relief which was fine. I did not have a catheter but they ensured that I had been to the toilet to pee before discharge.
