Hi, I started my Potions Course yesterday, and shortly into having the Paclitaxel I had a reaction. They stopped the infusion gave me other drugs, and let me rest for a while. They then restarted using different dosage timing for the next hour and hour, before final finishing on the normal timing. I was fine on the restarting just a little anxious to start with
there was a brief comment made about they may get me to take steroids ahead of next infusion, but just wondered what had happened to others if they had had a reaction? They said there were obviously notes put on my record, but my appt consultant is the afternoon just before next infusion. I will check with my nurses, but still interested to hear what has been done for others
thanks
Hi Waidh
I am sorry to hear that you had a reaction to the paclitaxel. There are others on here who have also had reactions.
Depending on the nature and extent of the reaction- it can be managed with slower infusions, extra steroids before the infusion, extra antihistamines before, reduced doses. Occasionally ladies on here have had the paclitaxel stopped and just continued with the carboplatin. Others have changed from the paclitaxel to another chemo drug.
They would also likely to monitor you more closely within the first part of the next infusion, blood pressure etc. to look out for any potential signs of another reaction.

Hi Waidh
I had chemo Paclitaxel and Carboplatin combination in 2022 and also had a reaction to Paclitaxel 3 times, the first time it happened they stopped the infusion immediately and gave me more meds and retried about 45mins later and it was ok, the consultant was informed and yes they also gave me steroid meds to take the day before the next chemo day, the reaction still happened the second and third time( even though they assured me it probably only happens first time and that i should be ok with the rest)!
After the third attempt I had a consultation with the senior chemo nurse, it was decided that best for me to continue with the Carboplatin only for the last 3 sessions, I was fine with that as it was only optional chemo I was having in case any stray cells were lurking somewhere . I feel I made the right decision, the reaction was scary!
It's common to have a reaction first attempt but not so common to keep having them.
You may be fine next time, at least you know the signs and probably can get them to stop it sooner if you go ahead?
Take care x
