Hello,

I am 39 years old and have PCOS. Recently suffering from severe bleeding to the point where a couple of weeks ago I passed out. I was told my iron levels were dangerously low and had 3 blood transfusions and have subsequently had 2 iron infusions. I had scans and a biopsy in hospital.

They believe I have a small fibroid or polyp and my lining was 20mm thick. Yesterday I had a call asking me to attend and I was told I have low grade cancer. I am awaiting an MRI and hysteroscopy but have been told I will need a hysterectomy (he would prefer me to lose about 2st first).

I don't have children (many years of fertility struggles) and so I'm finding the news of having to have a hysterectomy really difficult, he said there was an option to try and keep things at bay, have a child and then have the hysterectomy but he wouldn't recommend it (I feel like that was firstly due to it being very unlikely I would conceive and not wanting to delay the treatment).

I have been told that it's rarer for premenopausal women to get this, so I was just wondering if there was anybody here in a similar position re age/not having had children and facing a hysterectomy? Obviously I would be grateful for any support/advice from others in different circumstances too.

  • Hello Starsandsky

    Welcome to the Womb group.

I am sorry to hear of your diagnosis of a low grade endometrial cancer.

I can understand that it is hard when you are diagnosed at a younger age and when you do not have children. This link has some info that you may find helpful.

It is rarer for younger ladies to have a diagnosis however it can happen unfortunately. Many ladies tend to be of a post menopausal age.

The treatment that can be used sometimes in a low grade and early stage cancer is hormone treatment. I will pop a link in case it is something you want to discuss further with your consultant.

Lastly this link is to some general information about endometrial cancer.

Hope this helps a bit. If there is anything you need or want to ask, please do so.

We also have the Support Line available from 8am to 8pm daily, if you feel like chatting things through would help.

  • Thank you ever so much for your response Jane and for the links, I will take a look at those, they sound very helpful.

  • As Jane as said, there is a hormone treatment that women who want children can have - but only if they have low grade cancer. There are pros and cons and you should discuss this with your team. I am on hormone treatment but I am post menopausal. I have the Mirena coil and so far, so good. Everyone is an individual and you must make the decision that suits you best. Best wishes.

  • Thanks Lola, that makes sense. It's definitely something I'll discuss further with them. Pleased the coil is working out well for you.

  • I had my MRI today. Got my hysteroscopy on 17th March. Not sure if I will get MRI results before results of hysteroscopy or at the same time. Got telephone appointment through for Endocrinologist later in March too, I'm hoping they can help in relation to weight loss as I have also been referred to bariatrics and I feel as though that is quite extreme, not wanted and hopefully won't be needed! I have lost about 10lbs so far and have just over a stone and a half left to get my BMI to 40 which is where they want me to be prior to hysterectomy.

  • Sounds like things are moving forwards now. Hopefully the MRI results will not take too long.

Well done for losing 10lbs so far-not an easy thing to do.

  • Thanks Jane, that has been since Boxing Day though so very slow progress, although about 4 and a half pounds of that have been in the last 4 weeks since I came out of hospital as I have been much more focussed on eating healthily.

  • Well done for losing weight. It's not easy! I lost about 20lbs and then put back on about 7lbs at Christmas, which I still haven't lost yet! It's one step forward and two back with me sometimes but we must keep going....

  • Thanks Lola, amazing that you lost 20lbs, well done. Don't be hard on yourself regarding the 7lb Christmas gain, you'll get there again. Yes definitely know that feeling!
