Got my date for hysterectomy today , 6th March so not too long to wait . I am on anticoagulant Riveroxaban after a pulmonary embolism 5 years ago . Has anyone had experience of pre and post op when on blood thinners ?

  • I was asked if I was on meds at my pre op so you should talk to them about it then.
    good luck

  • Whilst not nearly as long as you I have been on blood thinners since June and had my hysterectomy in September.  You should confirm that you're the medication.  I was required to take the morning dose the day before and not again until they confirmed which I think I was the day after

  • Thankyou , did you need the injections after as well ?

  • No. They got me moving very quickly.   I don't think i would've been on them anyway.

  • Hi I am due to have a hysterectomy and I am on Warfarin as I have a mechanical heart valve. There is a plan of action that 5 days before my operation I use Heparin instead of Warfarin and my blood levels will be monitored after.

  • Hope it all goes well for you , my pre op is apparently a telephone appointment so will find out the  plan then I expect. Must take one step at a time !

  • Hi Rethead

They will normally ask you about other medication that you are on. They went through mine at my pre op appointment.

Being on the anticoagulant is definitely something they need to know as it may be that they need to make adjustments to it before the surgery.

Good Luck for the 6th. Hope it all goes well.

  • You too Rethead! I've had operations before whilst being on warfarin, the docs normally put a good plan in place.. Lots of well wishes! X

  • I have the opposite problem as I am on Northeistrone ahead of surgery on the 3rd March. This can cause blood clots as a side effect. I am worried that they will ask me to stop taking when I have my pre-op next week, but the bleeding is totally out of control when I am off it  - pretty much haemorrhage level. I am still bleeding heavily whilst on it but it is manageable.

  • They know what they're doing.  I very much doubt they will ask you to stop taking them.
