Had hysterectomy on Tuesday afternoon, it’s now Friday morning. I just feel exhausted. Got up, cleaned my teeth, came downstairs - had to ask my partner to cut up my toast it felt like too much effort. Is this normal?

  • Hi Rerun, when did you come home and how have you felt before today? Is there any chance that you overdid things yesterday? Any other symptoms? It’s normal to feel some tiredness, especially from the anaesthetic, but if you’re concerned I’d recommend phoning the ward or your CNS to check with them.

  • Came home yesterday. What is a CNS?

  • Ah ok - did you have open surgery or was it laparoscopic/robotic? A CNS is a cancer nurse specialist - in the UK we are usually assigned one (or to the team) after we are diagnosed, for support and questions.

  • Laparoscopic

Also, while we’re here - how long before I should expect to poop? Generally? Thanks

  • Hi Rerun

I also felt really tired for the first week. Partly I think due to the anaesthetic, partly due to the emotions, and partly due to the surgery/pain relief. However it would be best to give your hospital a call to let them know. There should be a number for the ward where you had you surgery on your discharge papers. You could also contact your cancer nurse specialist for reassurance.
