Had Hysterscopy today...

Hi all,

I had my hysterscopy appointment today, which was very painful in places especially right after ( close to contraction pain) but I got through it. Still uncomfortable now but much better than it was. The consultant managed to find and remove a polyp whilst there too. I'm pre- menopausal and finished  bleeding 2 days ago ( lasted 3 weeks) . The consultant mentioned how thick my endometrium was and said it was likely thicker than my last scan suggested ( 17mm). Of course I need wait for the results now which will seem like an eternity! Whilst doing the hysterscopy the consultant asked me if I had a smear test? I said it is booked for 14th Jan. She said ' good, you need one done'. Now it has me worried. I've also been suffering with pelvic pain and pressure, my tail bone etc... I know cervical and womb cancer are different but it has made me concerned that she said that.

Any advice/ reassurance is very welcome.

Thank you Blush

  • Hi MrsHutch24

I am sorry to hear that your hysteroscopy was so painful. I hope that the remaining pain settles overnight. If it does not, do not be afraid to give them a call. I was told to call if I had a lot of pain or if the bleeding did not settle.

I was also asked about my last smear test but had one 2 years previously so did not need to have one done. I would imagine that it would be a normal question to ask about during any gynae examination. It sounds like they are being thorough and that is a good thing. They need to find out the cause of your symptoms so they can work out what treatment is needed. Regarding the pressure and pelvic pain, I wonder if that may be connected in part to the polyp.

I think the main thing is that you have had these symptoms and done the right thing in getting checked out. Hopefully you will not have to wait too long for the results of today. In the meantime we are here if you need us.

  • Thank you Jane. I am feeling much better this morning so hopefully over the cramps etc now. Yes, it was probably routine that she ask but it was the way she said it. She said do you bleed after intercourse? Have you had a smear test? I said it was booked and she said ' good, I think you need one done'. Made me panic but like you say probably all routine.

    Thank you Blush

  • Glad you are feeling better this am. I think sometimes they panic us without meaning to, I know I used to read everything into what they said and often it was just a routine question

  • Hello Mrs Hutch, I think we might have had our hysteroscopies on nearly the same day? I had my second one on the 30th with a general anaesthetic.  Oddly enough apparently they couldn't find the polyps that showed up at the last hysteroscopy so the registrar just did a 'thorough sweep' where they'd been.

You did well to cope with local anaesthetics, having had both now, the local anaesthetic option is certainly a quicker process though.

How are you feeling now?  I've stopped bleeding and am now only taking paracetamol if my stomach aches - about once or twice a day.

The almost throwaway remarks doctors can make can be rather worrying,  but as Jane says the smear test question was probably routine . My gynaecologist was being very upbeat after mine, and said that aoart from where the polyps had been the lining looked healthy - so now I'm fretting about the bit which didn't look healthy ( of course).

It's quite anxiety making waiting for results isn't it? Hope they all come through soon for both of us x
