Hi 1st time posting . I have recently had hysterectomy everything taken except lymph nodes ( grade 1b )and am now having 3 Brachytherapy treatments . I have had 2 just wondering if any body has had similar side effects ,pain in rectum mainly when defacating after first treatment lasted all day ,some urinary mild symptoms after 2 nd treatment lasted 3 days approx ,mild symptoms of irritation like a mild uti, my stomach has got bigger I have put weight on fast after first treatment despite doing lots of walking somedays 10,000 steps .Don t know if I have an increased appetite because of treatment or if this has psychological causes , having these treatments makes me feel like a cancer patient ( they told me just op initially they thought 1 a) and I do not want to loose weight and look like one obviously see all those poor souls who are far worse off than me in waiting room , however I am unhappy with the gain 5 lbs in a week and a half , I just want to stay the same although expect to put 5lbs on at Xmas ! . Have also had some nausea doesn’t last too long and funny taste in mouth effecting the taste of food sometimes . I must say after hysterectomy my bowel movements did not go back to normal having problems just no longer having any push ,incomplete evacuation, won’t go into details .Surgeon just said take laxatives everything has moved into place where womb was , the laxatives don’t make a difference my stools are soft anyway . The radiologist at first brachytherapy to measure up scanned me and said I can see there is a lot going on you may need a barium enema to see what is going on before treatment begins the Dr may not want this so if you don’t hear anything just proceed as planned , they didn’t have time to do this I was on holiday the week before treatment started , 1 meant to discuss this last treatment but was thrown when it was thrown off kilter when it was a young lady I hadn’t seen before and not the usual older lady i had dealt with . I am feeling regretful generally unsure about this treatment especially as I have been given the dilators to use 3 times a week for a year . I am also waiting for results of scans treatment plan for a very rare cancer on the roof of my mouth which will need an operation so don’t see any end in sight . I drink very little and have never smoked so feeling resentful have 2 cancers at once would still be on non urgent waiting list if hadn’t been for the Uterine diagnosis and demanded an urgent referral , don’t feel I will ever be the same again both physically and mentally both times Drs said it won’t be cancer ,HRT for 10 years is supposed to protect against uterine only had 1 patient in 20 years doesn’t look like cancer etc
Hi Skye61
Welcome to the Womb group. I am sorry to hear of your cancer. You have had a lot to deal with and it is very understandable that you are feeling the way you do.
As you have a lot going on medically, I wonder whether it may be worth giving the Support Line a call and talking things through with a nurse. It sounds like you are dealing with some effects that are quite difficult to manage and would ideally need to be checked. Maybe chatting it through would be a good idea.

Hi so sorry you are going through so much; def speak to your centre about the symptoms if you can, or your GP if that’s not possible. I did get a very bad UTI a few days post brachytherapy and am still in some pain a few weeks later but it’s starting to settle. there was also blood in my urine which is apparently fairly standard post brachytherapy (according to my GP) but again will settle. Bowel movements def took time to settle post hysterectomy.
i also have two cancers found at the same time - its very tough, esp as the second cancer is taking quite a few months to finally confirm type etc Very best of luck - do lean on your GP if you need to
Thanks for your reply
I was having a bad day and just needed to vent I am sure you could tell going for last brachytherapy this Friday and will go ahead with it , just hate this feeling of poisoning my body and the after effects especially as I was given a choice . Everything has settled apart from taste , tiredness, ravenous at times usually when I have been asleep which I do a lot .Felt queasy in the car coming from the beach got stuck in traffic for over an hour and the exhaust fumes made me feel yuk ,not really expecting to find out results of mouth cancer tests until after Christmas one half of me wants to know now the other half doesn’t .They think it’s really rare one but won’t know for sure until removal and of course I am worrying my symptoms could be this and not the brachytherapy. No doubt I will be having brachytherapy again in this area just seems no end in sight hard to stay positive at times you must feel the same , hope you get treatment soon and find out it’s not too bad a cancer and make the most of Christmas Xx
