Advice on life after a hysterectomy

I have an appointment tomorrow with a consultant who is advising me to have my ovaries and potentially my uterus removed, maybe other bits too. This is purely precautionary as I don't  currently have ovarian or womb cancer. I have, however recently had breast cancer and he says there may be a link, and that (particularly with ovarian cancer) they don't always show symptoms, and anyway I don't need these organs anymore ( I'm 60)! Whilst all what he says is probably true, I am worried about the effect having these organs removed will have on my life, immediately after the surgery, and later on my sex life. I'm looking for advice from you lovely ladies on the reality of how it has effected you.

  • Hi Winjess

I am sorry to hear of your recent breast cancer and that it means you are being advised to have a hysterectomy.

I had my hysterectomy in April 2022. it was done via keyhole. I had little pain, was in hospital for 1 night and recovered quickly from it. I had treatment after surgery and it that that left me with some side effects.

The actual hysterectomy was straightforward. It was a case of not over doing it or lifting anything too heavy. Within a couple of weeks I felt well. I would say about 6 weeks recovery in all with no lasting effects.

  • Thanks Jane, that is reassuring.

  • Hi Winjess

I had a total hysterectomy when I was 25 that sent me into an early menopause. The best thing for me was HRT spray called Lenzetto - it helped me with hot flushes, sleep, and generally lifted my mood! Felt much more like myself.

I would say to ask your doctor about HRT as it can be a game changer for lots of different things!

    keep well!
