Red stringy blood in urine in leg bag after hysterectomy

I had my hysterectomy last week done laparoscopically. They nicked the bladder so I have a catheter in whilst the bladder heals. I’ve notice a couple of red stringy like things which I assume is blood in the leg bag. The urine is a normal yellow colour and this has only been a couple of occasions since I left hospital last Wednesday.
Is this something I should be concerned about or is this normal as the bladder is healing? I’m not due to get the catheter removed until 17th December.

  • Hi

I would give your GP and your CNS a call to check.  I can not say if that is usual.  You could also try giving the Macmillan help line a call and talk to one of the nurses but I would definitely say to have it checked out.

I hope it's nothing to worry about

  • Thank you. I’ll try the helpline as I don’t have a CNS yet

  • Hi EP17, are you in the UK? I’d suggest phoning your ward if you don’t have a CNS (I was assigned mine upon diagnosis).

  • Yes in the UK. I never thought about calling the ward. I’ll give it a try. Thanks

  • Hi EP17

It may well be due to the bladder healing but please give the hospital a call to get some reassurance, just in case it needs checking or there is an infection or something brewing. If you look on the discharge paperwork from your hospital, there should be a number to call.

You could also give the Support Line a call if you wanted to talk it through first.

  • Rang the ward and they were unconcerned at the moment with the urine being normal colour but if clots appear I should seek medical help. I’ll keep an eye on it.

    Thanks for your replies
