Brachytherapy side effects

hi after a very long saga i finally completed brachytherapy for my stage 1b grade 1 cancer (but with tbc lung mets) last week. A few days i later i started getting serious stomach cramps, vomitting (but bile) and diarrhoea. That finally passed but the cramping has continued with very pain and tender right side and part of left side. I can’t face asking for a GP appt (i hate asking for help and taking their time again) so am wondering if anyone else has had this after brachytherapy? I delayed my lung op as was feeling so bad and a new date has come in for Xmas eve! But hopefully i will feel up to it by then

  • Hi Tangle

I remember that you don't like asking for help but you need to get checked. What about the radiotherapy dept where you had the brachytherapy? Is there a number you can call for advice on any of your discharge papers?

I did not have brachytherapy but had external beam radiotherapy and it can cause side effects- I was told to give the dept a call in the first instance if I had any worries/ side effects from the treatment.

Hopefully they can give you some reassurance over the phone but its better to ask them than to worry about it, especially as you need to be feeling well for your lung op.

Alternatively why not give the Support Line a quick call and ask for advice from one of the nurses.

  • Hi Tangle123, no nothing at all like that - I was told that any side effects if they occur tend to be focussed in the vaginal/bladder/urethra area, ie in the immediate vicinity of the treatment. I’d suggest contacting your CNS or the radiotherapy department for reassurance.

  • Thanks both - the chemist gave me a home UTI test kit and that came back as positive so will contact the GP tom; if they don’t think its that i will let the brachytherapy people know ….anyone else tired of appointments yet (and i have only been at this since July :(0

  • That sounds like a good plan and the UTI would explain the side pains perhaps. I am sure your GP will offer reassurance.

I know what you mean about appointments- they can seem endless. But eventually they do end- I have recently had my final check up and discharged to patient led follow up. When you are in the middle of it all though, it does seem never ending.

    Hope the UTI clears quickly
