Recurrent Womb Cancer

My mother was diagnosed with stage 3 womb cancer in November 2021.  In January 2022 she had a full hysterectomy followed by 4 rounds of chemo and 6 weeks of radiotherapy.  The scan after showed no further signs of cancer.  However, in October 2023 she was diagnosed with recurrent womb cancer which showed a growth on her lymph nodes in her groin and nodes on her lungs.  She was told it was not curable but she would receive palliative treatment.  They estimated that she would have around 12 months at that time.  She then began 6 rounds of chemo which finished in March 2024.  A scan shows that the nodes on her lungs had reduced and the cancer tumor on the lymph node had stayed the same size.  In October she has been told again that the cancer is growing and as well as on her lungs she also has nodes on her liver.  She has again began 6 rounds of chemo.  She is 84 and has been through so much.

I don't know how this treatment will go, but I am worried.  She has lost quite a bit of weight and her appetite is not what it was.  I am assuming that they are giving her more chemo as they think that they can extend her life.  It is not something she has asked as it is something I know she is worried about.

  • Hi  and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.

I'm sorry to read that your mum's cancer recurred and it sounds like a worrying time for you both.

I'm not a member of this group but noticed that your post hadn't had any replies yet. Responding to you will 'bump' it back to the top of the discussion list again.

While you're waiting for replies, it would be great if you could put something about your mum's diagnosis and treatment to date into your profile as it really helps others when replying to you and also when looking for someone on a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.

Sending virtual ((hugs)) to you both

  • Hello JD29

I am very sorry to hear that Mum's cancer returned.

I had chemotherapy myself and it is a hard treatment to go through and it must be difficult for her to have it at her older age. Has she got a supportive CNS that you can both talk to? They would be best placed to know how Mum is doing generally and also talk about the aims of her treatment and how to manage the side effects.

You could also talk about her weight loss and whether there is anything that can help. Sometimes it can be difficult to eat if the nausea is affecting her. I had different tablets that did help but also had some build up drinks that helped. I found sharp tasting food and drinks better.

You are very welcome to post here for support as much as you need. We also have another forum that may be worth looking at. It is for people that are supporting others through an incurable diagnosis. You may find others facing similar worries.

We also have the Support Line and I can recommend giving it a call if you feel like talking things through would help. The number is below. They could also have a look for you and see what other support may be available in your local area.

I hope this helps a bit

  • Thank you.  We have not spoken to her CNS for a year.  We see her consultant at the hospital for her check ups and he is excellent.  Apart from that we have not spoken to anyone else.

I've been in touch with her GP to increase her pain medication.  She isn't feeling nauseous with the treatment, just totally off her food.  This started before her chemo though.  I have mentioned it on the phone to them.  She also mentioned it to the nurse when she went for treatment last week and they told her to eat little and often and high calorie foods.

I will have a look at the other forum.  Thank you.
