Brachytherapy

Hello,

I have some concerns regarding the Brachytherapy treatments I am scheduled to start 10/7/2024. I will be receiving 7Gy each time on October 7,9,14th. It is Cylinder single channel. The dose time is 5-15 min per treatment. Has anyone had this and if so, what has been your experience? Pain during, painful urination anytime after, bowel problems anytime after, nausea, any other physical pain and or fatigue? My diagnosis is Stage 1A Grade 1 with only (1) of 7 sentinel lymph nodes positive. I had Radical hysterectomy, I now have vaginal cuff.  I am extremely nervous to have this treatment but have been told it will give me a 95% chance of no recurrence, however they do tell me nothing is a 100% guarantee.

Thank you for your time,

Willow

  • Hi willowhawk

Was stage 1a grade 3 and had a radical hysterectomy then chemo and finally 3 sessions of brachiatherapy. I was bit apprehensive but honestly there was no need   I had no side effects from the sessions no nausea or bladder troubles.

Was then dreading the dilators but again it's been a doddle , good luck and I'm sure you will sail through this ..

  • Hi Willow, I had brachy back in 2022 and it was a breeze. No pain during, no painful urination after, no bowel problems, no nausea, no physical pain or fatigue - have you been Googling? If so, I’d suggest you stop! The applicator just felt like a tampon and the treatment lasted 6 minutes - there was music playing and it was 2 songs’ worth! I’m wondering if you’re not in the UK from how you typed the date - is that right?

  • Thank you so much, knowing that really helps.

  • Thank you for letting me know how your experience was. It helps a lot, and yes I've been Googling... That has definitely added to my concerns. I figured I needed to hear from people that had actually been through it, instead of the whole Googling, and found this place. Yes, I am in the U.S. Again, thank you

  • I've just finished three sessions. I wasn't given any scientific specifications but maybe other people here know more about that. I too had concerns about side effects. I was recommended to drink more which I have done and if necessary to adjust my diet to lower fibre but so far that hasn't been necessary. I was given percentages for side effects as part of the consent process. I have been tired but part of that is some relief that it's over. I don't have any discomfort but I can tell it's happened if that makes sense.

I found the staff doing the brachy were extremely good. So kind and considerate. I did tell them of my apprehension beforehand. I asked them to let me know via the intercom when it was half way through which helped. They also let me know when it was finished and they would be coming back in the room.

I do think there's room out there for more comprehensive information about brachy and about dilation therapy.

  • Thank you for sharing. I feel the same way about more info on the healing after radical hysterectomy, as well as brachy. I could find all sorts of statistical info, but not peoples actual experiences.
