LEAKING WOUND

I had my op on Friday 6th September. Am doing well but saw a nurse practitioner at the surgery on Friday 13th cos having trouble opening my bowels. This has now been resolved. I asked the practitioner to look at my wound and she said maybe there was an infection so put me on antibiotics. That afternoon and every day since my wound has been leaking. Quite a lot actually. I have an appointment tomorrow morning at the hospital to hopefully have my hernia repair drain out and also my  wound staples. I’m really worried in case they decided I need to have intravenous antibiotics as I think this will mean a hospital stay and I don’t sleep at all when in hospital. Didn’t sleep on the two nights after my op. Just wondered if any of you ladies had a wound that leaked a lot. Especially as it’s been over a week since surgery. My temperature is normal.

  • Hi Sue

I am sorry to hear your wound has been leaking.

I can understand your worry about having to stay in hospital and also the not sleeping.

I had to have IV antibiotics during chemo when I picked up an infection. The antibiotics were put in through a canula in seconds. It was a one time dose. Before I went home I was given a one off liquid antibiotic to drink. I got taken in during the evening and had a lot of different tests but was discharged first thing in the morning. It was the time taken for all the other tests that kept me in.

I hope that your appointment goes ok tomorrow and that hopefully having the drain out and stitches will help you feel more comfortable and help with the healing.

  • Hospital Sister took out staples, took a swab and redressed my wound. She’s contacting my GP to either have dressings changed at surgery daily or district nurse to come out to me. Got to keep take the antibiotics and if swab shows there no good for this infection then they will change to some different ones.

  • That sounds positive. Glad you don't have to stay in
