Following a slight post menopausal bleed at the end of May, I had an ultrasound, an ‘awake’ hysteroctopy, following by another under GA. 5th August I got the results stage 1 grade 1a. As an overweight 59 year old I was referred to prehab classes and for 4 weeks I’ve done 2 fitness classes a week and pre op education with macmillan which was brilliant - it encouraged me to do more exercise and eat well and I went into my Op yesterday 8kg lighter.
I wasn’t so nervous yesterday more upset/gutted that it has to be done. I had a full hysterectomy and fallopian tube removal - awake about 2pm and home by 5pm. I stayed up till 10 and managed a sandwich and a couple of Percy Pigs - not healthy but just what I needed!
ive had a decent night sleep/rest and today I am managing to walk around ok but taking it very easy. I feel very good in myself but obviously tender.
I have a nice routine for my painkillers and my nurse neighbour on point to do my blood thinning injections for a few days till I feel ready to do it myself.
its been a very odd journey but I’m glad I am one stage further on - I hope the results in 2/3 weeks are good and I can start to put this last few months behind me.
in the meantime I am going to focus on recovery - family, friends and work have all been really supportive so I feel lucky and determined to come back at my best.
i wanted to share my story - it’s been an odd time, I’ve not been over emotional but every now and then something has triggered a little lump in my throat. I suspect that to continue for a while yet but every minute of every day is a step closer to my new normal.
Hello Keepsmiling2024
Welcome to the Online Community and the Womb group. Thank you for sharing your story so far.
Sounds like your operation went to plan and am pleased to hear that you are feeling ok today. Plenty of rest and moving around when you can- helped me. I felt tender for a few days so just listen to your body and do not try to do too much too soon. It is great your neighbour can help with the blood thinning injections- they aren't great but are necessary.
Sounds like you have lots of support which is great but if you ever feel like you need to chat things through with someone else, then please do give the Support Line a call. They are lovely on there and the number is below.
I found my emotions a bit all over the place too. I think for me it was a lot about how quickly things moved forwards from the first symptom to surgery- there isn't a lot of time to think until you are recovering and back home. Also I believe the anaesthetic did affect me for a bit. For me the best thing was to go with the flow really and just accept that there would be sometimes when I felt good and sometimes I may feel low, but that it was all normal.
I hope you do not have to wait too long for your post op results- there does seem to be some variation between hospitals- mine came through around 3 1/2 weeks post op. At my hospital they are usually received the day of the Multi Disciplinary Team meeting- so for me that is a Thursday , so I tended to get called on a Thursday pm.
If you click on my name, my profile will come up but my journey started March 2022 and this month I will be having my next check up. You might want to pop something on your profile at some point- not everyone wants to - but it does help in responding to posts and also so people are aware where you are within your journey.
If there is anything you need or want to ask, please do so. There are a lovely bunch of ladies on here who will want to offer support. In the meantime, I wish you well with your recovery.
Jane
Hi glad you are doing good and on the road to recovery.
Your story sounds very similar to mine. Had a random bleed and had to have a Hysterectomy which I had a week gone Thursday.. out the day after operation.
I’m 59 in November and over weight but didn’t mention the weight classes before hand to me .. which I thought they would have mentioned as they weigh me each appointment.
i get my results a week today over the phone so have ‘moments’ and tears then feel a bit angry .. think all our heads will be up and down as it’s a lot to take in isn’t it
Still having blood thinner needles each night and not sure how long they have to be done for .. not sure if all the ones they give me have to be done … also not sure how long you have to keep the hospital stockings on…. Think she said 2 weeks but it was all a bit of a rush and a lot to take in when I was told you can go home now here’s some tablets and needles..
Not sure what happens next apart from the surgeon will ring next Tuesday… did you get any info on anything about what happens next?
Hope you are well
sounds like everyone has a different experience depending on where you live. The classes were so good and they continue when I’m ready to go back for a couple of weeks then I can switch to other community classes. I work full time but will do as much as I can to maintain some exercise
I was told to wear stockings for 1-2 days - I had a leaflet that said that and to take dressings off in the same period after first shower
I have 28 days of injections so 26 to go - not the nicest thing to do but I am hoping for a holiday in November so will do everything I can to get on that plane
I asked about follow up - for me the consultant said either I would just get a letter or a meeting with her if I needed further treatment- I would know in 2/3 weeks - if just a letter that’s it! I would have thought there would be a routine check in a few months but who knows,
hope you do well and make a speedy recovery too
Hi, think I got 3 boxes with 10 injections so I guess it must be the full lot Iv got to do … 2 boxes to go lol
Iv been googling the stockings bit and seems to range from a couple of days to a month… still wearing mine nearly 2 weeks down the line .. I did buy some off Amazon so got a few pairs to change into so easier now.
The consultant mentioned a bit extra treatment before I had the operation.. I keep forgetting the name Brac.. something or other.. just to give me a zap to make sure all is ok.
I guess it’s just a waiting thing now to hear what’s what
We’ve got a 7 month old puppy so she is my new exercise program can’t wait to get back out on walks.
Take care
Hi Geordiesuzie, how mobile and active are you now each day?
Hi, I’m up and pottering about letting the dog outside and walking up and downstairs… trying not to do too much if I’m honest as I keep forgetting and get told off x
I have had no problem going up and down stairs but being very careful not to much as it’s only day 3.
just had a shower so now taking it easy
Yeah don’t do too much as it will creep up on you feeling tired .
Im day 13 and pottering about .. I dyed my hair this morning but did it sitting on the bed with the mirror on the ironing board so wasn’t standing ages or anything
Something as simple as a shower and clean pjs makes you feel so much better doesn’t it
xx
Who is telling you off? It’s your body and it’s that you should be listening to, not anyone else! Other people will mean well, but they can also unintentionally hold us back too. If you feel able, then go for it! The only overdoing you can really do is lifting or not sitting down when you’re uncomfortable or tired. It’s really important to work up to being active physically as soon as you feel able. If you’re not yet taking regular exercise (ie walking) then the stockings likely need to stay on. Mine came off after two weeks as I had my post op check then and was walking 30-40 mins per day.
