MRI question

I had a pelvic and abdomen MRI today ahead of the consultant setting my treatment plan next week; the MRI team placed used a weighted apron on the area. I have daily cramps and pain but this pain is almost unbearable post MRI despite painkillers. Is this usual? Assume the tumour was being pressed?

  • Hi Tangle

I would suggest calling the hospital where you had the MRI and asking about this.

I have not heard of it but I never had an MRI- My hospital did CT scans instead.

Did you have contrast with the scan? I ask because I had a reaction to the contrast used during my staging CT.

It does not sound right that you should be in so much pain and it is not responding to pain killers. NHS 111 is another option.

  • Thank you - they put a weighted cover over the stomach and pelvis and i think things got squashed; no contrast but did have something to relax the bowel and bladder

  • I had a staging MRI but all I had was a nice soft blanket to keep me warm! I was told that the MRI can cause bowel spasms so was given Buscopan intravenously as a precaution - did you have that? I had no pain afterwards though I was a little constipated.

  • Yes i had the same - i think maybe i have had a reaction to it (still am!) so will mention next time

  • I’m not 100% sure but I think the Buscopan is to help prevent spasms during the MRI and clears your system soon after. I think it’s the separate contrast dye that can cause constipation but I’d suggest giving your CNS a call to check.

  • I’ve had the weighted cover for several of my pelvic mri scans and had Buscopan intravenously to reduce movement in the bowel. I understood the weighted cover was something connected to the imaging done-making it easier to read or clearer pictures I think but it is a while since I had one done like this. I didn’t have any pain afterwards nor any reaction to Buscopan or contrast dyes used. Has the pain subsided this morning?

  • Hi it has thank you - i was up until about 3am going to the loo every half hour so i def think my body didint love the Buscopan!

  • Hi again Tangle123, Buscopan isn’t connected to side effects of urgency, in fact it’s to alleviate bowel spasms, so it may have been more to do with the contrast dye. Best to speak to your CNS
