Hi everyone.
I had my meeting at Sheffield Hallamshire on Monday morning. Didn't see a Consultant but saw a very nice Doctor. She explained that since I have had two previous bowel surgeries, one for bowel cancer in 2005 and one for a strangulated incisional hernia "caused by the previous surgery" in 2010 I will be having open surgery that will be done vertically on my previous surgery line. This is further complicated by another large incisional hernia that appeared a few years ago.
The plan is to repair the hernia and then do the hysterectomy in the same operation. Although I'm relieved the hernia is going to be repaired I am worried that the time I will be under general anaesthetic will probably be double. I am an obese (17 stone now as lost 7lbs by eating really healthy since my diagnosis) 70 year old. When I voiced my concerns to the doctor she said the MRI showed my lungs were healthy. As they need to liaise with the bowel surgeon my operation will be sometime in September. My consultant for the hysterectomy will be Miss Macdonald.
Sending good wishes to all who are on and have been on this journey.

Hi Sue
Am glad that your appointment went well and there is now a plan in place. It sounds like they are looking after you well.
I hope that you get the date for your surgery soon, in the meantime we are here if you need us.

Hi Sue - I haven’t been on here for a few weeks and just seen this. You are in excellent hands with Miss Madeline McDonald. She did my surgery. Started out keyhole and had to have horizontal abdominal due to endometriosis and ovary being stuck to rectum. She did what was in my best interest and avoided any risk of having damage to bowel and the potential of a stoma.
I also worried due to being over weight but they didn’t have an issue with doing the operation. I don’t even remember them giving me the anaesthetic- I just remember coming round in the recovery area and Maddy was there to check how I was and advise of the change from keyhole/vaginal to abdominal.
I am now 6 weeks post op. Recovering well ( went to London for theatre show last weekend ) and going for a radiotherapy planning scan at Weston park 2/9 and then due to start treatment 16/9 ( belt and braces treatment just to be on the safe side).
You will get through this - Hallamshire Hospital staff were brilliant. Wishing you all the best.

Hi SueB4
I’ve been in a shared bay with 3 other ladies on the gynae ward, but also had my own room, so I had experience of both (I had 2 gynae surgeries at the Hallamshire). I had open abdominal surgery for both, with vertical cut and my experiences with both the staff and the care I received were very good. All good wishes for your upcoming surgery.

Thanks Sarah, It’s good to hear positive things about Sheffield Hallamshire. I have just read about your journey. You have certainly been through the mill as they say. So glad to hear you are now doing well. I have been told that if my colon is nicked during the op ( very very slight chance) then I will end up with a stoma and bag as I had quite a lot of large and small bowel taken away during my previous bowel surgeries. I told them I would face whatever was to come. You come across as a very strong lady and have faced everything that has been thrown at you. I wish you continued good health. Thank you so much for replying.
