Hysterectomy done two weeks ago

Hi all,

I'm calling this my whirlwind journey and I think a few of you may have experienced a similar feeling. It all doesn't seem quite real because it happened so fast.

Only a month ago I was diagnosed with Endometrial cancer type 2. To say I went into shock is an understatement! But here we are now two weeks after a total hysterectomy with some lymph nodes out and all. This incredible journey has had its highs and lows. "What are the highs?" you might wonder. Well the team of gynecologists, consultants and nurses and anaesthetists have all been incredible.

I went from diagnosis to scan to operation date in just two weeks. Then the lows, I don't know how but somehow I had prepared myself to be ready for that Robotic surgery. Then my consultant came to me just before I was due to go to theatre. There was a complication with her first patient of the day and she couldn't physically do my operation.

She gave me three options, first option was another consultant could do my operation today but as the robot was in use he would have to operate in a keyhole laparoscopic way, which I knew would be more invasive. Secondly she said I could have the surgery done the following week by the other consultant, robotically. Thirdly wait for her to do my operation in two weeks time.

I went for the first option, I was ready, I was there in the hospital, everything had been arranged at home and for my aftercare there and then.

I waited for quite a few more hours and then I had a pre-med and walked into the theatre. Two minutes later the new consultant came in and told me he had to assist my original consultant and that my operation was cancelled. I was devastated of course but I could understand the situation and I was fully behind the surgeons.

A hospital manager apologised to me and I went home. Just the following day I was booked in for the same time, same day the following week.

So, the surgery went well and my consultant called me yesterday to say that I have been down graded to low grade cancer. I have had time to process this and it is great that the best part, (if you can call it that), of my cancer was in the endometrium and has been taken away. Although my worries have not gone away, I am so thankful for the treatment I have had. I am having counselling through Bupa and Macmillan which will be invaluable to me.

I would love to hear of other people's 'whirlwind'.

Now to be known as the incredible journey.

Best wishes to you all x

  • Hi Shiqween

It certainly can feel like a whirlwind.

I am glad that you have had your surgery and were well looked after.

I wish you well for your continued recovery and if there is anything else you need, then please do ask.

Thank you for sharing your experiences and I know that it will help other ladies who are going through similar.

    Jane
