MRI AND CT RESULTS

I got my results yesterday. Good news is the cancer hasn’t spread. I don’t really understand if this means into the ovaries and cervix or it has not spread out of the womb and I didn’t ask the Consultant what it meant I’m afraid.  Bad news is it’s a very high grade. Obviously I won’t know the stage until they do the biopsy after my hysterectomy. Because it is a very high grade I will be having the operation in Sheffield and not my local hospital. Never thought to ask which Sheffield hospital it will be. I was also told they had tested me genetically as I had an op for bowel cancer in 2005. Test came back that it is genetic and I’m assuming it is Lynch Syndrome as I have seen other ladies talk about this. Have to wait for an appointment for Sheffield now. Presume this is with whoever is doing my op.
All the best to everyone.

  • SueB4, thanks for letting us know! If you’d like some clarification of what the results were and what it means, I’d suggest calling your CNS as they have immediate access to your notes. Your CNS should also be able to tell you if it’s BRCA or Lynch. From what you’ve said, and as a total guess, it **sounds** like predicted grade 3 stage 1a or 1b, where it’s high grade but believed to be contained within the wall of the uterus. But please please do check with your CNS to be sure. Some hospitals don’t even give predicted stages. The confirmed grade and confirmed stage can only be known post op. It’s only when they get the uterus out that they can have a proper look at the ovaries and cervix etc. Many women’s grade and stage are the same post op, others’ aren’t. Mine went up from a stage 1 to a stage 2 post op as stray cells were found on top of my cervix.

Thank you for your reply. I think the consultant said the biopsies they took were biopsied twice and came back as high grade. I have been contacted from the hospital by a nurse since I posted who said she will offer emotional support and will be sending me some leaflets in the post. Not sure if that was my CNS. She talked about the genetic tested and said Lynch Syndrome. I will ask about the grade etc when I go to my appointment at Sheffield. I’m presuming I’ll be seeing the surgeon who will be doing my hysterectomy.

  • Hi Sue

Am glad you have had your results back and not waiting and worrying.

I was also high grade and although its scary to hear that in practice it means that the cells look very different to the normal cells and that there is the potential for it to spread more quickly in some people. However as the consultant feels that it has not spread out of the womb then it is likely to be stage 1 or at the worst stage 2. It depends on how far the cancer has grown into the wall of the womb and whether any stray cells have reached the cervix. You are right in thinking that it will be confirmed post op.

It sounds that although it is unfortunately high grade- it has seemed to be caught early. Which is good.

I did not have Lynch syndrome but it means that there may be a genetic link with the bowel cancer and that there sometimes needs to be some more monitoring- as it can increase the cancer risks. My Mum had bowel cancer so it was one of the things discussed when I was diagnosed.

I hope that you do not have to wait too long for your appointment with Sheffield and I would imagine they would want to go ahead with the surgery as soon as they can. I would imagine the appointment will be to get your consent for the surgery, go through the details and to do the pre op checks.

Although mine was a high grade cancer (carcinoma sarcoma) I am almost at 2 years post treatment and have not had a recurrence. I am seen and checked every 12 weeks.

Hope this helps a bit but if there is anything else you need, then you know where we are.

Thank you so much for your reply. You have cleared up a lot of things concerning grades and staging. I am so pleased you are doing well. It sounds like they are keeping a careful eye on you. I really find it helpful talking to others that have been through what I am going through now.
