I have been told I am stage 1a type1 and need to lose weight before I can have a hysterectomy. I had a merina coil fitted yesterday but am terrified to start taking the megastrol that has also been prescribed, 2 COMMON side effects listed are weight gain!!! and blood clots. Is / has anyone else taking this and what was your experience with it?

  • Hello SC67

    Welcome to the Womb group.

I am sorry to hear that you have had a diagnosis of Endometrial cancer.

It sounds positive that it is still at an early stage and that a coil will be able to be used for a while to give you time to lose a bit of weight before the surgery.

I can understand your worries about side effects and it can be scary when things like blood clots are mentioned. I think the thing to remember is that they know your full medical history and that they will be monitoring you and that they feel this is the safest way ahead. Have they told you what to look out for in the way of side effects? So if you did get any symptoms that may be related to clots you would recognise them- just a thought- it might put your mind at rest a bit?

I can understand about the weight gain side effect when you are trying to lose some weight. Have they offered you any support with the weight loss? It isn't easy for any of us to lose weight. I wonder if there is any support or even possibly medication that could help. Also an idea of how much you would ideally need to lose to enable the surgery to go ahead.

Have you got a number for your Cancer Nurse Specialist that you could call and talk to about your concerns. Mine were lovely and could often give a bit of reassurance.

If talking things through first would help, perhaps give the Support Line a quick call and speak with one of the nurses. They will know more about the mirena coil and megastrol. The number is at the end of this.

Hope this helps a bit, if there is anything else you need, then please do ask.

    Jane
