Has anyone on here gone home the same day as having operation , as I know some hospitals offer this to right candidates .I’ve been reading about it and they say good for mobility in your own home and can recover well

aloy of hospitals offer this it seems

reason I’m asking is I’ve just had a call from hospital , due to being busy in my private room ( that didn’t last long )  booked me in  to a day surgery unit where they do hysterectomy and all sorts ?

now I’m confused Neutral face

  • Hi Mollysue, some people do go home the same day. In my case I was told I'd be in overnight and this is what happened. To be honest even though I was first on the list in the morning I wouldn't have been ready to go home the same day, I was still hooked up to fluids to get my SATs up and I was happy to stay in overnight I think I would have been worrying if they sent me home the same day. The hospital bed was far more comfortable than my own for the first night, but everyone's different.

  • I. Just wondered as I'm on day surgery unit now but suppose they can always move me if they keep be in longer

is rather stay in and be looked after really for one night I think too

  • I 100% agree Mollysue. Stay in for one night at least.

I would call your CNS tomorrow morning a day ask for clarification.

  • *and ask for clarification

  • At my hospital (Southampton), hysterectomies are done in the theatre in the day surgery unit but then patients are taken up to the ward overnight. However, same day home hysterectomies were to be on the cards within a year.

  • Hi mollysue

On the day of my surgery I was booked into a day unit- everyone went there first and had all the pre op chats etc. It was like a ward with only chairs and the elective surgeries waited there for their ops. Then I went down for surgery and afterwards was taken to another ward with single rooms as planned. Maybe speak to them in the am to get some clarification.

I would have found it hard going to go home the same day, even if I had my surgery earlier in the day. Although I did not have pain or issues, it was just reassuring to be checked regularly. Although I was up and walking within a couple of hours, my catheter was not taken out until the early hours and then there were checks etc to be done.

I wonder if this is what is planned for you- the day surgery unit before surgery and then back to the planned ward/room afterwards.

  • Hi jane2511, it was the same for me - about a dozen of us queuing up at 7.30am and then cubicles to wait in where chats were done and elastic stockings fitted - till we were called to walk to theatre

  • Same day hysterectomies. Hmm not convinced about that. My op took three hours due to adhesions. I felt really good post op but would not have been ready to go home same day.

I expect it would be a case by case decision.

I am all for progress but - same day hysterectomy - especially total hysterectomies. Not a great idea IMHO.

One size does not fit all

  • Hi all , I’m under the Royal Marsden and it was the same for me. There was a dedicated ward for patients having surgery that day. I was second on the list for my surgeon but didn’t go to theatre until around 1.30 pm which was a quite a long wait but my husband stayed with me and everyone was lovely. The plan for me was to go home the next day , although that didn’t happen, there was no way I could have gone home the same day. We are all different so you have to go with the flow ! Mollysue I’ll be thinking of you tomorrow it’s all going to be over and done with before you know it!

  • Hi Mollysue, I had my hysterectomy in 2018 at York. I was first down and was home the same day once they had shown me how to do the injections in my stomach to prevent blood clots.
