Stitch on stomach wound has come out

Just noticed one of the stitches on a wound near my belly button has decided to come out, I’m still on blood thinner injections so it’s bleeding more than it would if I wasn’t on them, but still not too much.

Should I call 111 (although not sure they’ll be much help) or just put a dry dressing over it for now?

  • Hello Differs Mum

Am sorry to hear that one of your stitches has come out.

You could call NHS111 and ask for advice but I would imagine that if it is not hurting and bleeding has stopped, then putting a clean dry dressing on it for now and getting it checked with GP/Nurse in the morning/in case it needs some of those thin strip dressings or perhaps antibiotics to prevent infection would be the likely advice.

The other alternative is to look on you discharge paperwork from the hysterectomy and there maybe a number on there or information about who to contact with any worries. For me it was a phone number for the gynae oncology nurse team.

    Hope its not too sore.

    Jane

  • Thanks for the response x

I’ve just finished a course of antibiotics today so I’m hoping that will give me some protection, hoping it can wait now till tomorrow but my main problem is due to my broken arm I can’t get in and out of bed as a normal person does and I’m worried that might make things worse…I’ll play it by ear and if it starts showing through the dressing I’ll ring 101

  • Listen phone NHS 111 and you will.get an out hours GP appointment that is they will tell you to go either to your nearest out department ( Sunday night was my hospital at St John's Livingston) they will look it and determine what treatment such as a stich or glue and dressing I suspect with you being unable to get out of bed without straning your tummy muscles the stich has popped, and you really don't want the one below doing the same as all the pressure will be on that one. PHONE 111 not worth the wait or worry xx

  • Duffersmum, by all means check with the ward or your CNS - are you sure it’s a stitch and not a shard of hardened glue? I had bits of glue coming out of mine, My dissolvable stitches came out of their own accord between days 23-29.

  • I’ve emailed consultants secretary who has spoken to the ward, who say GP should be able to help with this, so I’m waiting for a call back. It’s still bleeding this morning, not lots but obviously something needs doing! I could do without the faff though!

  • My wound where the small shard of glue came out (the one just below and to the right of my belly button) bled a little for quite a while and I used a disposable paper flannel on it as a pad till it stopped as that let it breathe. I literally just placed one there inside my pants as a barrier. I had told my CNS and emailed photos of the wound and they were happy with that as though it was weeping it wasn’t inflamed. I had bought the pack of paper flannels on Amazon pre op to use for washing.

  • GP has rang back and said stay on the blood thinners, keep a dressing on and hopefully the bleeding will stop but if needed I can go and see the nurse at the surgery, so that’s what I’ll do for now and hope it eventually gets fed up and stops!

  • When the glue came out of mine, I suspect the stitch might have too as it gapped a bit and bled/wept a little. It took a little longer to heal than the other two but was fine. It took a while to scab over because of the larger area but did so eventually.
