Oncologist appointment and aftercare

I had my telephone appointment with Dr. S.  my oncologist yesterday afternoon.

She confirmed again that although cancer had been found in one of the nineteen lymph nodes removed, counting it as Grade 1, Stage 3c, that everything had been removed during surgery and that the radiotherapy and brachytherapy were insurance and had sterilised the entire area. So, yes cancer free! She’s said this a few times now but I needed to address the Stage.

i will have regular follow-ups for a number of years. She will call again in four months and after that we will alternate between physical appointments and examinations and phone appointments. She also gave me a list of things to look out for and said if I had any concerns to call rather than wait for my next appointment. Also, that scans wouldn’t be done unless there were indications and they would then get me in immediately.

I shared about my side effects post radiotherapy, the only one hanging about is a tendency for trapped wind. She said that radiation can cause bowels to be more gassy and that it likely will ease up over time. I have found peppermint tea quickly sorts it out.

We also had a chat on the subject of dilators, which I have started using this week. I shared about the bright purple silicon ones that I had secured from the site suggested by MarmiteFan59.

So overall, a very positive chat.

  • Well done Muse. I remember when you arrived on this group, understandably with an amount of anxiety, and have watched you go through your surgery and treatment. I know we don’t know each other in real time, but I’m so very pleased for you the way you have faced everything head on and found your way through. You should be extremely proud of yourself. How are you feeling now that it’s all done?

  • As others have observed it’s a little strange not having cancer dominate my daily life. I have been updating my friends and relations via Facebook (screened posts so not public) pretty much daily. Now it’s more back to updating about the antics of my furry overlords (cats) and just life.

I joined the Life After Cancer forum as well.

It certainly has held lots of life lessons in terms of my relationship with my own mortality, which often seems theoretical until faced with a challenge such as this.

I plan on sticking around and also filling out my profile!

  • Hello Muse

I am glad that you had a positive appointment with your oncologist yesterday and are cancer free. It is reassuring that you will have regular check ups. I find I get quite anxious before these but on the whole I am glad that they are done.

I hope that the side effects from your radiotherapy settle over time.

    Good luck with the dilators.

If you need any further support please just ask

    Hi

Great news, I'm really pleased for you. Well done on joining the Life after cancer group. I found it helpful. It's as though I got my body put right then had to work on the mental aspect. I don't think either are fully fit and well, in my case but I keep plugging away! Well done Muse.

    A x

  • Cheers Jane

Pretty much everything has gone back to normal after radiotherapy except the occasional bought of trapped wind. I still feel a little tired but I understand that it can take a while for the body as a whole to recover

  • Yes the mental aspects are crucial and often overlooked.

I was offered counselling by my GP and will have a chat when I see them in a couple of weeks

  • I found that after the radiotherapy- things peaked at around 3 weeks after I finished and then started to settle. I do have some late effects though. The tiredness does seem to take a while but it does improve and I found plenty of rest to begin with and then just pace myself. I did however have chemo before the radiotherapy and had a few issues with my bloods so I think it all just adds up.
