Hi everyone. My mum had the results of her biopsy ( cancer of the uterus grade 3) last Thursday and she's been told she will now get a referral for further tests / treatment. How long does it usually take for the referral to come though? Thanks all.
Hi Chrissy74.
It seems to differ quite a lot from trust to trust, but after I had the result of my biopsy, I had a full body CT scan 4 days later and saw the surgeon 3 days after that. My cancer was also grade 3 and mine was serrous. Quite common I think.
Hope this helps and good luck to your mum.
Yes I can really appreciate that, but keep posting and asking questions, as there's a wealth of experience on here to draw from and everyone is so supportive. I had surgery in May and am now 18 of 25 radiotherapy treatments. Mine will be followed by 4 chemotherapy, but this is not the same for everyone and everyone's journey is different.
Hello Chrissy74.
I am sorry to hear that your Mum's biopsy has shown cancer. It is normal to be referred for further tests in these circumstances and they are looking to find out more information about the stage of the cancer so they can recommend the best treatment.
There is variation between hospitals however if you look at my profile it will give you a bit of an idea regarding timing. In my experience- I had a bleed and was then referred for ultrasounds. This showed a problem and I was called by someone the morning after the scan. I was told to come in for a biopsy the following day- which I did. At the biopsy the nurse said she had already referred me for a CT scan. I had a phone call and had the scan a few days later. It was about a week after that when I was called and told it was cancer. I saw the consultant 3 1/2 weeks after going to hospital. I had surgery 4 weeks from the very first symptom.
I would imagine that Mum is likely to be contacted in the next few days but there would be no harm in contacting the hospital or your GP for an update if you do not hear anything soon.
Hope this helps a bit and if there is anything else you need to know please just ask.
Jane
Hi Chrissy 74
I'm very sorry to hear about your mum's biopsy results, we all understand how difficult it is to face this news.
As the others have already said, timings and appointments vary from hospital to hospital.
My biopsy was Feb 2021. I got my results about 11 days after. Within a couple of weeks I had a CT scan and a MRI scan. Saw a consultant beginning of March then had to wait a whole month for my surgery.
I hope this will give you some idea of what kind of time frame to expect, but it could be quicker.
Sending kind and positive thoughts to you and your mum,
Helen xx

Hi Chrissy 74, sorry to hear your mum's news. There are lots of ladies in this group who will be able to offer you support and advice. The timeline and sequence of tests after the diagnosis do vary between different hospitals. I was diagnosed on 20 July 2022 and had an MRI and CT scan on 24 and 30 July respectively. I saw the surgeon on 11 August when she advised that I had stage 1a endometrial cancer. I subsequently found out that it was grade 3. I had to wait until 6 October for my hysterectomy. The operation went well and the surgeon said that the cancer appeared to be contained within the uterus. This was later confirmed after the post op histology was done. I subsequently had brachytherapy to reduce the chances of the cancer returning. Hope all goes well for your mum. x
Hi Chrissy74, I was told I had cancer on the Friday, and had my staging MRI and chest X Ray the following Tuesday, and results the following Friday.
Hi Chrissy, I had a hysteroscopy on 29th April, got my results on 17th May. Was then referred for a CAT scan and, as that didn’t give enough information, I then had an MRI. It appears to be stage 3 endometrial cancer. As I also have a hernia, this will need to involve colorectal surgeons as well as gyn surgeons. They are planning to do a radical hysterectomy. I also have to see anaesthetic team as I am high risk, because I am a smoker. I don’t see anaesthetic team until early September, so who knows when I’ll get a date for surgery! It’s all so frustrating!
