Hello everyone. Thinking ahead, to when I will start my chemo, probably early September, after my 25 sessions external radiotherapy, was wondering, if anyone has any thoughts/advice re loss of eyebrows and eyelashes?? Is there any alternative to microblading apart from going with the 'none at all' scenario? Have already decided to shave my head, before I start to lose my hair and not sure about the wig route or whether I will just rock the scarves/hats alternative. Mind you, have always looked dreadful in hats, so perhaps a wig is the better option!! Thanks in advance.

  • Thank you Mad. It's good to have another take on it.x

  • Yes and remember if you did want to try it and then it hurts too much for you and you don't wish to continue, I'm sure your decision will be respected without a fuss. My nurse team said they'd had good results with most ladies.

Good luck with whatever you choose. X

  • Forgot to mention eyebrows, I pencil mine in anyway and continued to do so as mine are fair. During chemotherapy I found I lost more on one side than the other! I know on Instagram I have seen a pen with multi nibs that you draw in your eyebrows, that would be best option for me if I needed it now. If you decided microblading best do it now, I was told not have it done during chemo to minimize risk of infection.

Eyelashes- I lost my eyelashes towards the end of chemo but found  they grew back quick. I bought false ones as had special occasion to go to, but just couldn't get on putting them on.

I will try find the name of that eyebrow pen for you xx

  • Hi Mad. Thank you again for your help. I go regularly to have my eyebrows threaded and tinted, because although my hair is white, my eyebrows are still dark, but thin due to overplucking in the 70s!! The girl who does them, is absolutely amazing, so will also seek her advice. Simply wigs do human hair stick on eyebrows too, but would probably need Asha to apply them each time, as undoubtedly, I wouldn't get them symmetrical!xx

    Hi

When I was starting chemo, I had a pre assessment appointment with the chemo nurse and she went through everything I could expect. She gave me a form for a free wig and a choice of hairdressers that they use for supply. I got a synthetic wig worth a couple of hundred pounds and took it home from the hair appointment. I know that procedures vary across the country though. I personally preferred hats but I had chemo in the summer and wigs were very hot.

I used eyebrow pencils for eyebrows as they and my eyelashes completely fell out. In fact, all hair everywhere went. I remember that my hair started to hurt when it was loosening and that's when I asked my husband to give me a buzz cut.  My CNS referred me to the Macmillan centre at my local hospital and I had reflexology. They also booked me on a Look good, feel better course. It was a morning session with other cancer patients, I got makeup to use in the session and bring home and a full size bottle of perfume. Best wishes for your treatment.

  • Thank you so much. Am overwhelmed, by the support and advice, I have received so far from everyone in this group, especially as some of you are facing far worse scenarios, than me and are so brave.xx

  • I will echo that Love to Walk - from my radiography team who have said this to me. They are required to advise of the possible side effects but it’s not a given and like MarmiteFan59 said for many it is minimal.

from what I understand the radiotherapy beam is very precisely targeted and has become more sophisticated over time, one of the reasons why some online advise might be outdated and it’s best to discuss with your team
