Womb cancer

Hi,

I started bleeding discoloured discharge in March.

Went to GP who sent me for other tests.

I have had them and been told I have cancer, then given a pack from mc millian nurse who has been assigned to me.

Mri scan arranged next, then appointment to see consultant and his team.

When we got to the hospital only saw consultant and the mcmillan nurse who i could contact. Informed i would have to have a full hysterectomy by keyhole surgery. Also my lymph glands would be checked to ensure that cancer had not spread.

Given date in June for operation.i have not been told the stage of my cancer but thought they didn't know until the womb was checked after removal. but most seem to know what stage they are at. I also was given a date for my pre op assessment.

Having been on this forum has helped me and given me loads of advice and i was managing ok. Had a lovely holiday for a week came back thursday night.

Friday has been really tough. Got a message from the hospital to call them so that they can arrange my pre op and date for surgery which I found a bit confusing since I had already been given these.

When I rang back I was told my date was now 28th May and my pre op assessment 18th May. I told the member of staff I had already got dates. Felt very confused and panicky. I can't get any information why my dates are changed which has got me worrying about my cancer stage and because I wasn't telephoned tell 3.30 pm I could not get hold of anyone to help me I was told it would be Monday.

I feel this system is wrong I have been given date for pre op and it is on the portal they set up for you at hospital. It would be better if the nurse they assigned to you could have helped me today. Feel a bit upset so I know I'm waffling but any advice would be helpful if anything similar has happened to you.

  • Hi Fuchia, I can understand why you might be concerned, but it’s actually totally normal practice to bring operation dates forward, for no other reason that they’ve been very efficient and got through more ops than they thought they would, and have been able to shorten their lists, My hospital employed a new surgeon to work with the current one so that women could be seen more quickly. So, whilst feeling for you in the anxiety you’re experiencing, i hope you’re able not to worry too much and to be glad that you re going to get sorted sooner!

  • Hi Fuchia,

I had a similar experience to you.

I was suddenly called to go for a pre op on a Friday, with a view to operating on the Tuesday.. This was two weeks earlier than the date they had given me!!!  You can imagine what I was thinking. When I got home from the pre op,( which took most of the day) there was a message saying they weren't operating after all, and stick to my original dates!! It turns out they had an earlier space, but then they had an urgent case turned up on the Friday whilst I was having the pre op.

I didn't know whether to be cross about it all, or pleased that I wasn't deemed urgent. It did nothing for the blood pressure!!!

I think you just have to be ready for anything and have your bag packed. I was in a flat spin that weekend. I had no bag packed, no pads, no nightie!!! A huge panic for nothing, as it turned out!! All that was 6 years ago, and been fine since. Good luck.xxx

    Hi

Don't worry about being brought forward, it can be a good thing. My hysterectomy was straightforward and went ahead as planned. Then things went a bit unexpected and I needed more surgery (good that you're having MRI pre surgery, I didn't get that). I got a date then someone rang me and it was moved forward. Then the night before the preop assessment the surgeon rang me and asked if I wanted the surgery straight after the preop, in the morning! I asked the surgeon whilst being consented if I had been moved forward as I was in pain, he just said no, there was a cancellation. Things still went a bit wayward after that, you can read my profile by clicking on my username. Remember though that everyone is different and I've not read any stories like mine, whether that's because my cancer acted out of character and I didn't fit the profile, as I have been told or there was too little investigation pre op, I don't know.

We're all here for advice and support for you. Best wishes for your surgery.

    A x

  • Hi Fuchia, as others have said it's highly likely that there has been a cancellation and they are now able to bring your operation forward. I was diagnosed in late July 2022 and, initially, everything moved very quickly - CT and MRI scans, appointment with surgeon, pre op assessment. But I then had to wait 6 weeks for my operation which I found a very anxious time. I would have been relieved if my op had been brought forward. There's a lot of Information to take in so if you're not sure about anything contact your Macmillan nurse. I was given a provisional staging and grading after my biopsies, CT and MRI scans were done. I was then given a formal staging and grading after the operation which thankfully had not changed. Good luck with your op.

  • Yes I got a date for surgery Before my pre assessment so they had to change it all around I have not been told my stage either anyway I go for my keyhole op at 7.10 in morning all of a sudden I am scared I have been fine all the way  to this point .   Someone medical along the way said I would be out day after cos its keyhole now I have been told a week

  • Thank you so much for your advice it has really helped me. Wishing you well

  • I am very grateful for comments given this has helped me alot and I can't thank you enough for replying with good advice. Wishing you all the best in your journey.

  • I was told I would probably stay in one night due to you having to have a catheter removed and to be walking about. Don't want to be in any longer really but am grateful that the team know what is best for each of us. I wish you all the best for a speedy recovery after your surgery
