Hysterectomy done in healing phase

My surgery happened on Tuesday 14th using the Da Vinci robot. Everything was removed including a number of lymph nodes. However, they could see that these were enlarged and so it’s pretty much going to involve further treatment. 4-6 weeks for results and then team meeting before appointment. Radiotherapy was mentioned though surgeon and nurses suggested not to speculate until more is determined when full results are back.

They did have a good look around at other organs inc lungs, liver, bowels etc. and felt it hadn’t spread. However, while removing nodes on right side where I have a hernia a vein was nicked. They patched it successfully and I was closely observed for a few days. They considered a blood transfusion though didn’t happen. Lots of blood tests and blood pressure was low. By Friday afternoon it seemed that my haemoglobin was recovering naturally even if not to normal yet.

my largest wound did seep blood a couple of times on Wednesday when first sitting up and doctor examined. It settled down though I have a whopping bruise  on my left side.

i was released on Friday evening and my son is being wonderful looking after me.

Am sitting up during the day though finding it hard to focus on much aside from television. With my walking sticks I am able to get myself to the stairs and creep up them to use the bathroom. Then down again. Nurses felt that this is good for me to move about and to set an alarm to go up regularly.

So here I am six days later. Feeling weak but getting lots of rest.

  • Hi Muse

I'm just a few weeks ahead of you - I had a full hysterectomy on 18/02/23 which means I'm 4 weeks and 2 days post-op today. As my uterus was "bulky" I had a lateral incision which goes from above my tummy button to my pubes. The 54 clips were removed on days 13 and 16.

The surgeon has reassured me that he has removed it all, but like you, it all hinges on the follow-up appointment. Eeek!  I've only got until Thursday to wait now although I'm feeling apprehensive. He told me pre-op that adjunct radiotherapy (belt and braces) would be indicated, but I'm frequently reading on here that other ladies have need chemo too. I had a Grade 3 adenocarcinoma and my pre-op pelvic MRI didn't show any other involvement although I wasn't ever given a Staging.

My wound is healing well. I am still exhausted by doing very little. I try to walk around the block every day, but it only takes 5-6 mins! I have finished my 28 days of fragmin injections in to my tummy (hoorah!) although I'm still wearing my TED socks. Personally, I found the injections very painful - not the needle but the actual fluid used to sting for a good 5 minutes each time. I did the last few into the top of my leg which didn't seem so bad.

I have low abdo aches when I walk, especially if I haven't been to the loo - sorry if that's too much information! My bladder feels uncomfortable - its as if it still doesn't know where to sit now my uterus isn't there for it to lean on, but apparently it will settle in time.

Don't worry about not being able to focus - its the anaesthetic and painkillers. After 4 weeks I can finally read a book although I still cant follow a plot on anything more than a chic-flic! And I still lose the thread of a conversation!

You might feel like you're not doing anything when you're resting but, believe me, your body is working hard to heal!

    Take care.

  • I shall keep what you say in mind. Physically I am unable to walk unaided outside as arthritis prevents without walking aids. Walking around the house regularly.

The injection luckily only stings for a second. Yes the top of the thigh seems a good alternative site.

i have applied for an assisted bin collection from council and from tomorrow I am going to fix my own breakfast supervised by my son while he’s here. It’s lovely being waited on but I need to increase what I do for myself while he is here.

    Hi

Pleased to hear your surgery is done and out the way. Your recovery sounds a good balance of doing little bits yourself and support from your son when you're tired/it's too much for you. Remember, no lifting. I hope your recovery goes smoothly and best wishes for your results.

    A x

  • Hi Muse, glad your surgery happened this time and hope that you recover well x

  • Hi Muse

I had a full Hysterectomy done on 20th March, supposedly all went well, I was home on 21st as had the robotic surgery, won't know until 12th for my results if I need further treatment as I have stage 1 endometrial  cancer , had no problems, no bleeding now, no pain since after wed apart from severe constipation/pains which is driving me nuts lol, , my blood pressure was low in hospital, but did start to pick up, but my mood has been low, don't honestly know why, maybe its a normal thing

    Get better soon x
