What a week. All prepared to go into hospital for my robotic assisted hysterectomy on Friday 17th March. Got a phone call on Tuesday to say it was cancelled. New date 30th March. OK devastated but started making preparations for the weekend to make up for it.

Phone call the next day to say it was all systems go again on Friday they had a cancelation.

Arrived at hospital at 7.45am on Friday. Staff were a bit baffled at why I'd been asked to come in so early as I was second on the list but hey ho. Was admitted saw my consultant and aneathatist and was told I should be going to theatre at around noon.

At 11am I was told I was on hold there wasn't a bed for me! My operation could be cancelled again. There was to be a bed meeting at 11.30 but if they hadn't found a bed by 2pm I'd be going home! There were 4 other ladies in the same situation.

At 1.30pm there was a big cheer and an Irish jig when my nurse told me I had a bed! I went to theatre at 2pm and woke up at about 4pm to be told the surgery had gone well.

Spent about 4 hours in recovery, longer than I needed to before I got transferred to the ward at around 8pm. Said a quick hello to my husband and daughter who had been waiting to see me since 6pm.

The staff in their wisdom decided to do hourly observations during the night, even though they were normal, which meant I got virtually no sleep at all. Given paracetamol and codine for pain and an injection in my tummy to help prevent blood clotting. My catheter was removed at 6am and I was glad to see the day shift arrive at 8am. Being a retired nurse I felt like I'd done a night shift.

Got up used the commode, had breakfast and got dressed. Can't say I was in a great deal of pain just weary due to lack of sleep.

Saw doctor after lunch who was happy to discharge me home. Will take about 3 weeks for the results of biopsies so that's a story for another day.

After a good night's sleep and breakfast in bed I'm feeling grateful. Happy mother's day.
