Hi,  I finished my radio and chemo treatment 5 weeks ago but pelvis and lower back is very stiff and at times painful and hard to walk. Also got neuropathy in both feet. Am doing light exercises to strengthen the core area and walking about an hour a day. Any other tips out there at all is much appreciated.

thanks

  • Hi Mari

I was very similar. Walking does help but I found it hard going to begin with. It seemed a fine line between doing enough and not overdoing it. Took a while for my bloods to settle as well. On the days I don't walk I do find the neuropathy is not so good. Keeping hands and feet warm with woolly socks and gloves helped me. I felt my balance was affected at times. Hot water on lower back and hips helped me at times. Massaging hands and feet sometimes gave some relief. Keeping my finger moving- playing piano and knitting seems to help keeping them more supple. My chemo finished in Aug and my radio in Sept- I have had 2 all clear check ups but still feel uncomfortable/achy/stiff around pelvis/lower back. I found my clinical nurse helpful who does the nurse led clinics- she reassured me that it was normal and would take time. I find soft shoes- like those canvas trainer types more comfortable than stiffer leather boots/shoes.

  • Hi Mari

I finished Radio and Chemo in Dec 22 so slightly ahead of you. I am seeing a physiotherapist for nerve pain in my hands. She has given me some good excersises to do at home and the tingling has improved over the last 2 months. I am doing hand exercises for finger stiffness too. Maybe you could ask your nurse or GP to refer you?

My feet have neuropathy as well and I also noticed balance issues. Doing some excersises for this, mostly standing on one leg and balancing on a wobbly cushion :) Grinning it's very difficult but makes me laugh.

Hope you find something which helps. Neuropathy symptoms are supposed to improve over time but there are treatments around to repair the nerve damage. Some patient do TENS therapy on hand and feet.

  • Thanks so much Jane for all your useful advice. All the best x

  • Thanks Can, some really useful advice. I’ve been referred to a physio though will probably see a private one soon as waiting list is so long. All the best to you too xx
