Surgery delayed…

Quite a stressful day.

When I and other patients arrived at the hospital rather than being whisked to our beds we were sitting on chairs. Ages passed and then we learned that there were no beds. Apparently they had 20 day cases on Monday that were expected to go home but only 6 did. While others were expected to be discharged this morning, it was a long process. Surgeons and their teams were clearly also in holding patterns.

At 10:30 myself and two other women were taken to another ward though again it took another 90 mins I was actually in a bed. Got changed into hospital gown and waited ….. and waited. Fell asleep and when I was woken at 15:00 two nurses were with me to announce that due to the surgery that was done before me, (it was supposed to be a quick one that patient could recover in day surgery) running into complications the decision was made to send me (and probably others) home.  Apparently the patient and surgical team were still in theatre.

Next step…I’m on a priority list and they will be holding a team meeting on Friday and I will be advised then. No guarantee it will be next week and my son’s plans are also up in the air with respect to time off and my after care.

So there it is…naturally worried about the delay and the cancer advancing

  • I’m so sorry Muse that you’ve had this disappointment. Hopefully the new date will be very soon.

    Hi

Sorry to hear the surgery is postponed. It's very frustrating as there's not much you can do but wait for the next slot. Hopefully won't be long.

  • Yes it was just one of those things and it was frustrating but understandable that they needed to give priority to someone whose surgery proved more complex than expected.

  • That’s such a disappointment for you and your emotions must be playing havoc. I am still getting over the disappointment of my abandoned hysterectomy last week because of disease progression but at least the team can get on with my further treatment plan and I have an appointment with oncology on Friday so I’m trying to stay positive. I hope you hear soon about your surgery and I am thinking of you.

  • Hi sistermoon

thankyou for suggesting and I’ve updated my profile.

  • Hi  sorry your surgery was postponed hope you get a new date soon. I know how you feel, mine was supposed to be on the 10th of February but it was cancelled two days before and I was referred to another hospital. I have now got a new date of 17th March and feeling  better knowing the date. Hopefully you'll hear more on Friday. Thinking of you.

  • Hi Muse - This must have been so disappointing for you, especially when you've psyched yourself up ready to get it over and done with.  I think this type of thing does happen quite regularly though.  The day after my surgery a new lady was admitted about 7am and she was due to have surgery that day, hour by hour the time ticked on and at one point one of the surgical team did come up to speak to her saying it wouldn't be much longer   I don't know what had happened but around 5pm she was sent home...I can only presume there had been some emergencies come in but she was not happy as she had missed wimbledon and not eaten all day.  I did feel really sorry for her.

Sorry to hear that it's not as straightforward as once thought. Hope all goes well tomorrow and you get a plan.

  • Yes the not eating from the night before was hard. Then my transport turned up before a tea or sandwich could arrive. Quite a frustrating day
