Hi all first post here but I do log in and read a lot of threads about treatment. I was diagnosed in June of this year with mixed high grade serous adenocarcinoma/endometrial cancer. I've had surgery and am on 3 out of 4 chemotherapy sessions, my last one (hopefully) is next Thursday. I'm then due 25 external radiotherapy and 2 brachiotherapy. Oh and I'm only 30 years old. Struggling mentally big time, haven't moved from my bed since my last treatment.
I live in a really rural place, don't drive and the hospitals I've been to so far (4 different ones so far) are all around 1 hour 20 to 1 hour 30 mins one way. This would be 2 buses and a train plus walking between stations/stops if I had used this but I have been using a local charity for every appointment so far, so grateful for their volunteers or I wouldn't have been able to make my appointments as there's no way I'd manage to get to the hospital for 8.30am each infusion day and I'm beginning to worry about my radiotherapy as its going to be Monday to Friday for 5 weeks. They're under a lot of strain taking so many patients daily and I have had to change appointments in the past if they have no cars or drivers available so you can see where my worries are starting to creep in.
Is there anything in place for people like me who can't get to appointments? Even with public transport. I was thinking of something along the lines of travelling to my Monday radiotherapy and staying in accommodation somewhere until Friday and travelling home again I'm not sure if this is a thing? Who can set this up or look into options? The travelling is going to be tiring and the side effects may be enough that I'm worried of having accidents on the journey back. Any help or advice is appreciated thank you and sorry for the length of this post
Hello Chewie
Have you considered asking the radiotherapy dept if they know of any accomodation they would recommend.
When I was going through radiotherapy my accomodation was arranged through the hospital/radiotherapy dept as I was living on a scottish island. The accomodation was in the nearest clan haven and they kindly provided a taxi to the appointments.
Its all very much dependant on where you live and facilities available.
I'm sure if you enquire at your hospital appointments someone would be able to help, at least with local information.
I am sorry to hear you have had to go through this, its not nice at any age, but for someone so young its very challenging. I hope you can get some help somewhere.
Hi Chewie and welcome to the group. Well done for already having had your surgery and also almost being done with your chemo. Do you have contact with your CNS? It’s worth asking either them or your nearest Maggie’s centre what provision your radiotherapy hospital makes for people in your situation. At my hospital some patients were given accommodation at the local Jury’s Inn hotel Monday to Friday during radio.
Hello Chewie, I second what Shellie69 advises and call the radiotherapy department or the hospital/oncology that treated you and ask for help! I never had to use it thankfully but I do know that my hospital do have volunteers and special cars for transportation of patients from their homes to radiotherapy department which is done at another hospital 1 Hour journey away. Also you could ask if the radiotherapy Dept have advice on how to get patient accomodations at the hospital but you will have a lot of free time doing nothing and it can be lonely as radiotherapy treatment is very quick. The waiting around is longer than treatment times which roughly is a few minutes.
There's a lot to think about, when my son had radiotherapy he also had to go everyday and we arranged a timetable with family and his friends who were willing to help, to take him on different days that way it made his daily journey more bearable having different people to talk to but I appreciate not everyone has this option, I'm just trying to open up few more ideas to you but whatever happens I do hope you manage a way to get there safely and hope the time flies by and you're through with treatments. Xxx
Hi Chewie
Have you tried calling the Macmillan helpline for advice? I typed in travel costs on the home page site to find out if anyone else had found help with this. It might be worth you looking for ideas. Below is a post i saw referring to a HCT 5 form, i dont know what this is to be honest. I hope it helps but definitely think give the helpline a call.
We have recently found out that we can claim back travel costs for taking Mum to hospital for her appointments and operation. I have the HCT 5 form
