Lynch Syndrome

A quick query. I had my blood test for Lynch Syndrome on 31 October and was advised the result could take 2/3 months. I imagine that waiting times vary across the country but wondered how long others had to wait.

  • Hi SH53, was this a provisional test or full genetic testing?

  • Prior to the test I had a lengthy consultation with a Genetics specialist which included, amongst other things, my family tree up to grandparent level and relevant health issues. She filled in the referral form and I then went to a walk-in clinic for the test. She only mentioned Lynch Syndrome so I'm not aware if it was a provisional of full genetic testing. Possibly the former?

  • It’s hard to say as different hospitals may do things differently. My provisional test was done automatically from tissue from my hysterectomy and the result took a month (though I was told 6-8 weeks). My BRCA test took 6 weeks.

  • Hi SH53

My lynch test was done separately from genetics . I had over the phone appointment with the genetics team after I sent them the questionnaire back about my family tree and any deaths from cancer etc. The lynch came back after about a month. The genetics results took about 3 months. I hope this helps. X

  • SH, My test was to be done from the biopsy. I was told six weeks, but when I called to find out seven weeks later, I was told they never got the request, so my doctor resent it to the lab two weeks ago.

  • Hi, the initial test is done from a sample from the tumour The results from that inform whether you get a further test following an appointment with genetics. I was sent out a blood test pack to take to my Gp and the results took 11 weeks. Confirmed positive for Lynch Syndrome yesterday.  A lot to take in as I have 2 daughters . Hope this helps. A x

  • I think it was something in my biopsies which prompted the referral to the Genetics specialist which in turn led to the blood test. Not an easy decision but on balance I think I'd rather know.

  • Annie, it’s good to see you - thinking of you as you process this news and move forward with decisions for yourself and conversations with your daughters.

  • Hi Amanda, lovely to see you too. Thank you, it’s going to be a bit tough with the girls but it’s best we know what we are dealing with and will get regular screening. Spoke to my gp today and she had never heard of lynch syndrome, don’t think that’s unusual! How are you doing? Hopefully all is well with you . Ax
