Being out and about

Hello ladies,

As a relative newbie, I’m looking for some advice! If you had chemo on a 3 week cycle, did you pretty much self-isolate during week 2, when immunity is lowest, or did you try to carry on as near normal as possible? I have a couple of events taking place at the start of my second week 2 and am unsure whether to cancel. I’m currently in week 2 of round 1 and feeling reasonably well (just annoying skin irritation).

Thank you!

  • Hiya Annie

To be honest I just carried on as normal but I was working from home and the only public place I went was shopping in a supermarket! And occasionally had a meal out.  I masked myself up when out  and took care always applying the hand sanitizer and washed my hands on returning home etc. I still met up with family and friends but they were mindful not to come anywhere near me and no kissing hugging etc and they kept away if they were the slightest bit poorly. I found my blood count went lower with every chemo, so towards the end of treatments cycle 6 it was at it's lowest. I took advice from my CNS and ate well ( lots of greens spinach and citrus fruits etc) the occasional Guiness with my main meal too! I was either very lucky or did the right things who knows, we are all individuals so can only advise on my own experience.

    Hope this helps xx

  • Thank you for your reply. That’s helpful to know. I think I’m going to risk the James Taylor concert which is week 3, but think about giving a conference a miss! Hope you’re doing well.

  • Hi

You could always ask your CNS but I guess no one really knows what to do. I've been pretty well and it's 3 months since I finished Chemo. Came back from a much needed holiday abroad then felt unwell and discovered I'd caught COVID !  Thankfully Just a light dose of it and the lovely NHS lady that rang me said I  probably will be OK without the treatments they now offer to immunocompromised patients but I could have it if I wanted to.

I do think and this is MY opinion....I keep my life and mind as normal as possible and only remembered I've had cancer when I hop on to this forum. This helps me stay positive as for myself it's so important.

Hope you keep well throughout your treatments and ask anything you need however small.

    Take care xx

  • Thank you so much for this. I tend to be pretty positive so I think that’s probably the right approach for me too. I’ll get the flu and Covid boosters next week and wear masks in crowded places. So glad you’re doing well and that Covid was mild.

Did you manage to get travel insurance??

    best wishes, Annie

  • I'd take James Taylor over a conference any day LOL!. I agree with , mask up, wash hands and avoid hugs.

I confess I became a bit of a hermit when undergoing chemo. Finished in March, went out for a day in August and caught Covid - couldn't believe it. I was given the extra treatment available under NHS.

I would also ask your chemo nurses their advice - they know best.

    Hugs, Barbx

  • Hi I too carried on pretty much as normal.  It depends what type of chemo you are having and what side effects you get.  I only had carboplatin so apart from the steroid side effects no other issues.  As an old hand at chemo having had breast cancer 14 years ago as well, I found a pattern begins to emerge and you can then pretty much plan things around it.  On this occasion I found after the first couple of sessions that I seemed to get a massive reaction to the steroids and found it best for those around me to avoid anything major for the first 4 days after which I was ok.  I managed to go on 2 1 week breaks as well.  The second break the chemo nurses were very worried about.  But I had no issues.  It seemed to depend on which chemo nurse you got as to their reaction to things.  As has been said I too masked up everywhere I went.  I still do.  It takes a long time for full immunity to  return to normal.  I am having the flu and covid jabs in a couple of weeks.  It really helps to carry on as normal if you can.  Take care xx

  • Thank you, Daisy. I’m on paclotax (?) and carboplatin for womb cancer. I think I’ll understand my reactions as I go through the cycles, and will listen to my body! Really helps to hear your experience. Take care, and thanks again. X

  • Thanks Barb! Yes, JT is a must! Conference and wedding, though…..??

I will talk to the nurses next time I go for treatment. Take good care and thanks again

  • Hi Annie, I’m on the same regime as you and I try to keep things as normal as possible. It took me along time to recover after round 3 but I still managed to go to a concert last Saturday which I really enjoyed. I had round 4 yesterday so all good. Karen xx
