Hi,

Well as I'd mentioned before,  today is the first session of 3, I was pacing my living room waiting for my arranged transport to arrive at 8.30, appointment was for 12.00,  taxi arrived at 11.10, I was a total wreck by then if I'm honest,  once I got to Clatterbridge,  I registered in and waited in the waiting area,  I was soon called in, i was so nervous,  but the nurse was lovely,  really put my mind at ease,  I lay on the treatment bed and everything was explained to me before anything was done,  I had the internal to check applicator size,  then once that was inserted (very gently might I add) they attached it to the metal plate that was sticking up on the bed,  I felt comfortable and at ease,  again everything was explained very well to me before treatment started,  I was relaxed and ready,  the nurses left the room after explaining they could see me at all times and I  could tell them to stop if I was uncomfortable,  treatment lasted 6 minutes,  the nurses came in and asked me how I was feeling,  then unattatched me from the metal plate,  the applicator was removed,  again very gently and I was helped off the bed,  I got dressed,  all the while I'm having conversations with the nurses,  they made me laugh and I  really appreciated it,  the whole thing was totally different from what I'd imagined in my head,  so any of you ladies who are about to have it done,  please don't worry, I'm a worrier and it was easy and painless and quick,  I started with a little period like pain tonight so I've taken a couple of paracetamol and I'm good now,  thank you to all you ladies for posting your own experiences on here,  I read each and every one of them,  making my treatment today sound much more do-able xxx

  • Hey Proudnanny! Well done! Really glad you had a good experience.

  • Hi Proudnanny. Thank you for sharing your experience, makes it easier for others about to undergo the same treatment.

The idea of the procedure seems so alien, but I agree it was quick and totally painless and the nurses, wherever they are, are so brilliant at talking us through it and keeping us calm.

    Hope the discomfort passed quickly.

    Hugs, Barb xx

  • Marmitefan59,  if I hadn't of joined this group and read everyone's experiences I m not sure if I'd of gone ahead with the treatment,  I was that scared,  I did experience a bit of pain during my internal,  but after the nurse used a speculum to see better, it was a  lump,  she said it's a hematoma,  like a blood clot,  all due to surgery and nothing to worry about,  she was extra gentle inserting the applicator and treatment went ahead as planned,  I was told I might experience a bit of spotting later, but its nothing to worry about,  I did spot a little last night but nothing more than that,  I'm really happy I went and I'm not concerned about next session, the nurse said she'd give me another internal to check on the hematoma but again assured me it's nothing and will eventually dissappear,  it can happen after surgery apparently,  I'm feeling a bit achy today but I personally think it's because I was so tense yesterday morning, thank you again for posting your experience,  you don't realise just how much it helped me xxx

  • MrsBJH, I've no discomfort today,  I'm achy but that's because I was so tense yesterday morning,  this group is amazing at putting other people at ease,  I actually said to the nurses I feel silly for being scared,  they said it's only natural to imagine the worst case scenario,  I'm glad to help others overcome their fears,  I'll post again next Tuesday and let everyone know how I'm doing xxx

  • Hi Proudnanny

I'm so pleased that your 1st Brachy went well and it was better than you thought, im sure the next cycle we be a cake walk for you now you know what to expect. As you said proudnanny the lovely ladies on this site really help with their support and by sharing their experiences.

I had my 2nd cycle on Tuesday and although my 1st one went really well with just a couple of days of running to the toilet, I have had even less bowel frequency this time. I hope your 2nd one goes even better for you too. I have my final one this Tuesday and can't wait as it will mean the end of my treatment hopefully.

All the very best wishes for your next 2 cycles.

    Hugs Robin x

  • Hi Robin27,

Congratulations on having your last session on Tues,  can I ask a question if you don't mind.....will you be ringing the bell after your last session on Tuesday? I'm asking because my aunty,  who had breast cancer 3 yrs ago asked me if I'm going to ring the bell like she did,  I'm having treatment at the Clatterbridge Cancer Centre in Liverpool,  it's relatively new,  2 yrs old,  I don't even know if there's a bell to ring, my aunty had her radiotherapy sessions at Halton hospital in Runcorn,  she wants me to have my photo taken ringing it,  I'll need to ask if they have one first x

  • Proudnanny, just to say that at my hospital the bell is in the unit where people have chemo.

  • Hi Proudnanny

Thank you, no I don't mind you asking. I have given this a lot of thought. During chemo it was really lovely while I was sat there to hear the bell ringing when people finished their treatment. For those that didn't want to ring the bell at our hospital in the East Midlands, they will present you with a certificate if you want one. I didn't do either at the end of Chemo.

I have noticed a bell in our Radiology department too but at this stage iam really torn about rining it next week. Part of me thinks that after the rough road I have been on to get to this point I deserve to rining it to celebrate, but my fear is that because I have serous grade 3 cancer this might not be the end of treatment for ever and if I ring it i would somehow  jinx it and it might come back. I know that this may sound silly but it is a  niggling thought that I can't seem to shake.

I think its a really good question you have asked Proudnanny, I would be interest to know what other ladies thoughts on this subject and what they did at the end of their treatment.

    Big hugs Robin. x

  • Thank you for sharing your experience, Proudnanny - it’s helpful as I have my first brachytherapy session on Nov 1st. Hope all goes well for you. xx
