Are my team lying to me?

I've been diagnosed with Clear cell endometrial cancer extending into the cervix, Grade 2, Stage 3a.

My consultant says it's not suitable for surgery because the edges of the tumour were very friable, but..shouldn't they be doing a complete hysterectomy first? Then the qualities of the edges of the tumour wouldn't even be a thing.

They told me - promised me, which seemed a tad unethical to say about ANY cancer - that they were looking at a complete cure with radiotherapy alone, no surgery, no chemo.

My cancer is so aggressive that, according to research, my chances of 5 year survival are less than 35%, and there are no recorded cases of 10 year survival.

What on earth is my CNS and consultant doing?? Their proposed treatment plan makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. I can't even talk to my CNS about it because she's the one who explained the treatment plan (or lack of it!) to me and said she was perfectly happy that they were aiming for a complete cure with radiotherapy alone.

I am baffled. I can't find any examples of radiotherapy without surgery first or any curative approaches to my cancer at my stage.

Something's just not right here.

  • Hi Suki Silver, I’d suggest you maybe consider requesting a referral for a second opinion at a different hospital. You could also phone the Macmillan phone helpline and speak to a nurse.

  • Yes I think I will call the Macmillan helpline. I can't change my team because Edinburgh Western General is the only cancer unit my health authority uses. I would have to go private to go to another hospital.

  • Are you absolutely sure you’ve been diagnosed with endometrial and not cervical cancer? As they are typically treated differently

  • Endometrial extending into the cervix, so I suppose I'm somewhere in between. The larger part of my tumour is in my womb.

  • Hi @Suki Silver

I think I would be wanting to ask about their experience of dealing specifically with treatment of glassy cell cancer as it’s so rare. I would also be asking why there is no chemo planned along with radiotherapy. I can appreciate that you are concerned that radiotherapy is the only proposed plan, and that they promised they were looking at a complete cure with radiotherapy alone. Cervical cancer is treated differently to womb cancer, and would not involve surgery at stage 2, but would have a combination of radio and chemo, with brachytherapy. Your treatment plan does sound strange.
