hi all, long story short i am very unhappy with my 'care' for womb cancer. The consultant who operates won't see me until my BMI has dropped. I have to lose weight. I was fitted with mirena coil end of january (stage 1 cancer). every time i call my nurse, which isn't often, she leaves it a week or so before responding, i left her a message on Tuesday and still no response (she's not on leave) I have been felt to feel low by my treatment team. I want to ask for a transfer to another local hospital which has a very good oncology department. Just looking for advice please. Thank you x

  • Hello Decan6

You should first air your concerns through your GP  they can refer you to a different healthcare on the NHS. I found this on  NHS site

    Hope this helps  xx

  • If you want to be under a different surgeon you might need to check out the situation at the other local hospital as  surgeons often operate in more than one hospital in an area.

Hello Decan6, sorry that you are going through this on top of your diagnosis! I would definitely ask to change teams if you are not being given the right support. From my experience having a high bmi (In my case very) and an underlying physical disability doesn’t mean you can’t have surgery.  I had a mirena coil but it wasn’t very effective for me. I was also referred to the bariatric team and was put on some medication, which helped with some weight loss.  so after a lot of planning and pre-op assessments surgery was deemed the best option. i had it last May 21. Because of high BMI they couldn’t remove the lymph nodes so had a course of radiotherapy. I have to say My first experience of meeting a surgeon was not a good one and I went away feeling that my high bmi was a massive issue. . But the rest of the team and the  surgeon who  did my coil and my surgery were brilliant, we all acknowledged the challenges and they were incredibly supportive throughout. Good luck and I hope you get the support that you need. x

  • thank you. I will try and get an appt to speak to my doctor tomorrow.

  • If your surgery does eConsult that might be the easiest way to get through if your surgery is as busy as ours at the moment!

  • thank you for your reply. I have aired my concerns with my cancer nurse today (who told me she didn't receive a voicemail from me, its on my phone that i did) and she asked mewhen did i have my hysteroscopy, i told her i've never had one in the two biopsies i've had. So, i think the push i gave was needed. Hysteroscopy and biopsy this month. Dietician on weds, Maggies centre to get some advice and help. I think a firm hand sometimes helps, which isn't like me.

  • , good for you for pushing, sometimes that's what we need to do.

    Hugs, Barb xx

  • thank you, i had an appt booked tpday but the surgeon who will be doing my op called me. He said he is prepared to do my surgery if my bmi is between 55-60. I told him i have lost more weight so now i am in the target for surgery. He apologised for the lack of information given to me by his colleagues and the lack of support. He completely understood the emotional impact on me. I will have an mri within the week to see how the tumour is. At last i have been given the answers i have been looking for and now know i will be having surgery very soon. Thank you so much to everyone in this group and to MacMillan who have been a god send xx

The surgeons don't seem to be consistent, my BMI is 50 and the MDP said they want me to lose weight before they operate.

I've gone down from a BMI of 55 so far with no help from the dietitian they are supposed to have referred me to 3 weeks ago, so I'm going to see what they say at my next appointment at the end of the month.

  • yes i know, i had to complain on monday, and he called today. I have to have an mri next week, and told him i would rather lose more weight. It depends on the tumour though. I had to complain to my doctor about lack of help re weight loss, it seemed to work as i had a zoom call with dietiician today. I hate complaining, but when it comes to my health and future i had to stand up and have my say. I hope you get some answers and help very soon Anniie, xx
