Hair loss after hysterectomy?

Since my operation (radical hysterectomy) around 2.5 years ago, I have developed female pattern baldness. The hair on the top of my head has got thinner and thinner and now I am nearly bald on top.  The general consensus seems to be it is caused by the loss of female hormones from  the operation although not everyone is affected to the same extent.. However I cannot take female hormone supplements - my consultant does not recommend female hormone supplements or even creams after a radical hysterectomy. Anyone here experienced this? Have you used Rogaine? Does it work?. Or a small hairpiece? Similar experiences and solutions appreciated

  • Have you had a thyroid function test recently at all? If not I suggest you ask your GP for one as it may not be related to your hysterectomy at all and it would be worth making sure it’s not thyroid issues.

  • I heartily agree with Marmite Fan. I was diagnosed with thyroid problems and didn't realise until months afterwards that my hair had been getting straighter and straighter. Once I was on thyroid tablets my hair resumed its normal curly self!!! This was a couple of years before the cancer. Might be worth getting checked out.

  • Hi . I agree with the others. When I developed hyperthyroidism my hair became thin and brittle as well as other symptoms. I had a sub-total thyroidectomy which make the thyroid under active for which I take a daily early morning tablet. Had no problems ever since, have to have a 6 months blood test and hair was restored to normal very quickly.
