Bowels!!!

I had my total open hysterectomy including my ovaries and tubes in may 2021. Ever since my op I have had horrendous problems with my bowel. I have urgency,  often uncontrollable diarrhoea and am bent double with pain. I went for my three monthly gynae check up today. At the risk of tmi when the consultant was feeling round my vagina it made me feel like I was going to poo. Is this normal??

  • Hi Deborino, I am exactly the same nearly two years on.  My GP has organised a colonoscopy which I have in 2 weeks time.  So hope it is not a case of here we go again.   I too wonder if other people after suffering with this after a hystetectomy.

  • Hi, Thank you for sharing, one year on and I have similar problems.  I invested in a good loo brush.  Pelvic floor exercises seem to have help control the urgency, but I cannot sit for any length of time without my tail bone aching, a cushion helps for a few extra minutes.  My current experiment is trying to cut down on my consumption of fruit in the morning... When I mentioned my bowl movements to my oncologist she was not worried and recommended loperamide/imodium for the odd event.  I carry on bouncing from worrying to acceptance that this is how life will be.

  • My GP gave me loperamide too. My sarcoma consultant is going to ask my GP to arrange some tests. He said that a year is too long for the bowel to be  upset by the surgery even though I had lots of adhesions from two caesareans. I've had to buy a radar key as I'm constantly worrying about being too far from a loo.

  • Deborino, the symptoms sound similar to IBS - maybe some dietary tweaks might help?

  • You can get a Just Can't Wait card from Bladder and Bowel Association which is useful in shops and pubs if you are caught without public toilets nearby.

  • Very early days for me but I was already an IBS sufferer (I've been a Mebeverine and Lansoprazole user for a looong time) and I have had a lot of bowel issues since my op. It doesn't hurt to actually go to the loo but just before I'm often bent over. It's weird as with that pain I also have a kind of numbness and less sensitivity in feeling. It's hard to describe. I've found I'm having to have a much plainer diet than usual. I had a bit of cake yesterday with lactose in and I'm paying for it today - my intolerances have shifted up a notch. I do wonder how it effects the biology and position of the bowels. Sorry to hear you're still suffering a year on though. Sorry.. not much help but it looks as if this isn't that rare.

  • Hi . I discovered after my hysterectomy I'd developed diverticulosis which meant I had to switch from fruit, fibre, wholegrain which caused my gut to be a fermentation vat to more bland food.

I think the bowels do take quite a long time to settle down. I do remember one lady here provided a picture of how we should sit on the loo with feet on a stool therefore knees much higher. I suppose if you think of it before loos were invented we used to squat.

Hope things get sorted, Barb xx
