Bleeding while taking Provera (progesterone)

Hi, I’m hoping one of you lovely ladies can help to share your experience of taking Provera (for those that are taking it please).

I’m taking 600mg per day plus the mirena coil.

The last scan was showing no thickening of the womb lining but of course, I’ll only know for sure how much cancer is present following the biopsy.

I have been getting spotting while I’ve been on this treatment. I don’t know if its a bad sign. My consultant always asks me if I’m getting spotting, as if its a bad thing but would be interesting to know if other women here on this treatment (I know not many) can tell me if they also experienced this. I just saw a fair amount of fresh blood, so I’m not sure whether to be worried.

Thanks for your help xx

  • Hi . I'm sorry I can't think of any ladies taking Provera here. Until any of them come forward I'd suggest you type Provera into the search bar at the top of the page where you'll find some answers from other members, have a read through them.

In addition, for reassurance, why not call one of the Nurses on the Macmillan Support Helpline, freephone number shown below.

Also give your CNS a call on Monday, she'll be able to advise.

    Hugs, Barb xx

  • Hi, I am on Provera but only 30mg at the moment, I am spotting but today had a bit more bleeding. My nurse said it was normal?

  • Hi, are you taking provera for endometriosis or endometrial cancer?

I am on a much higher dosage and I still get spotting and bleeding now and then. It is normal because its just your body’s reaction to taking the hormone and not getting a period. There will be some days where the hormone levels change and it will cause some spotting.

However, there are other reasons why the spotting could occur, such as a mirena coil which has become displaced. Or the endometrial cells not being contained by the level of hormone. So its always best to check with the consultant/oncologist on these issues.

  • Ive now been on this treatment a year . Initially found it v difficult to find any information about it or women on the treatment. So if anyone wants to ask me anything, feel free. I have now gained a good level of knowledge that I can share, if needed. If it helps anyone.

  • I am taking it for endometrial cancer, as I have covid and therefore my surgery delayed I have asked for the Provera to be increased in dosage as I’m scared it will spread. I have only been on it for 3 weeks now but I would like to know more. Thank you

  • Im really sorry to hear it, re: endometrial cancer, I know what a scary and unsettling experience it is. I hope you are managing ok.

Hope you feel better and the covid passes soon.

I think you made a good choice in asking for Provera. Particularly if the oncologist agrees that the Provera could be helpful.

The purpose of taking Provera is to increase progesterone levels and reduce estrogen in the womb for cancers that have a dependency on Estrogen. How do we know if our cancer is estrogen dependent? The oncologist should have done this test and can tell you if the cancer cells have estrogen receptors and if they were the dominant cells. If this was the case, I believe the Provera has a good chance of working.

In my case, it certainly has contained the cancer and prevented it from spreading. However this is not a medication its a hormone therapy, so for women that intend to take it for womb preservation, they will need to keep in mind that it takes time. Its a slow process.

  • That makes absolute sense, all I want to do is make sure my cancer doesn’t spread over the next 7 weeks before I have a full hysterectomy. They have said they think they caught it early and they are increasing my dose if I believe it will help me mentally. I’m not sure that helps as I want them to be the ones telling me what I should do and be re-assured not doing it if it helps my mental health?

  • Ok, that’s good you will have something working on the womb while you wait for surgery.

From what I’ve been told, by 3 surgeons (as I sought second opinions) this tends to be a slow growth cancer. I hope this will put your mind at ease. I assume your medical team will know what grade the cells are. And they can advise based on that. (As they did with me).

I know what you mean regarding wanting them to tell you the best dosage. I had similar issues. I went for the full dosage (600mg) which is the maximum. I also had a mirena coil fitted with 30mg.

  • Yes they told me it’s stage 1a grade 1 and only just turning into cancer apparently. I don’t have the coil fitted though x

  • Gives me much more hope knowing they are catching these cancers earlier. Glad yours is low grade too. All the best with the surgery. X
