Hysterectomy Day Case

Hi Everyone

I've just had a call from my Consultant re: my hysterectomy surgery on Friday. He seems very optimistic about it all and has let me know I'm first in bright and early (at least I know now I don't have to wait around!). He's also let me know that as I'll be going in so early I'm going to be coming home that night and treated as a day case (!!), as long as I have someone home with me. In his words, if I was staying in and having surgery later I'd get booted out at 8am anyway!

My thinking is the less time in hospital the better, of course. I'm less likely to get covid for one thing. And I'm sure they won't make me go home if there are any complications.

I've never heard of hysterectomy as an outpatient, though and I'm a bit dizzy now! I'm sure I'm in for a bit of a bumpy night and my husband is going to going to get an earful off me :/ Has anyone else had this and can you think of anything I should have on hand at home on Friday night?!

  • You really aren't far! I enjoy going to Forest Arts in New Milton (though haven't been since Covid - I will be back!). I'm in Poole. I will definitely ask as you're right.. I don't have the whole picture yet.

  • Hi ,

    1. I had my hysterectomy as a day case, arriving at hospital at 7.30am and home by 8pm that evening after proving I could pass urine OK. I was first on the table that morning and back on the ward by early afternoon. Journey home was uncomfortable - a 45 mile journey. Worst part was a sore throat from the tube they insert during op - I'd recommend something to soothe e.g. water to drink or sweets to suck. Was able to get in and out of car ok, walked from ward, and got upstairs to bed, albeit still woozy from anaesthetic. I found my eyesight was a bit fuzzy for 48 hours afterwards.

Hope your surgery goes well - rest of my story can be found in.my profile.

    Take care, Dx

  • That's very encouraging . I'm in at 7.15am and I have been told outright I'm first up from the horse's mouth so hopefully the day will pan out similar. Luckily I only have a 2 mile journey, if that.

  • I had my hysterectomy a couple of weeks ago and probably would have been ok to go home the same day if I’d have been first on the surgery list. As it was I was late afternoon so in overnight and okayed for discharge the next morning (although it took forever to get things sorted so I could go but that’s another story!)

One thing I need after a GA is wet food! Soup, yoghurt etc. I get a really dry mouth so struggle to eat anything too solid for a day or two. Also lots of loose clothing. I thought gym leggings would be ok as they’re really stretchy and move but I found them too tight and uncomfortable for the first week or so.

Good luck! Sure all will go well for you.

  • We love Forest Arts! Have seen Lee Mack there, also Milton Jones, Hugh Dennis, Dane Baptiste, Shappi Khorsandi, Simon Evans, Hal Cruttenden, Omid Djalili, St Agnes Fountain, Gordon Giltrap and others! It’s literally a mile from our home! I’ve been to Poole Hospital for nerve conduction studies before and also brought my daughter once for an MRI. I had my scans, op and treatment at Southampton - as we’re on the Hants/Dorset border we get to choose either Bournemouth or Southampton . My GP felt Southampton would get me in quicker, plus any treatment would be done there too, whereas with Bournemouth you go to Poole for treatment.

  • Hi, I was going to be let out the same day and I didn’t have my surgery until 12.39, unfortunately my oxygen levels were low and they wouldn’t let me out until they came up. Don’t think I would have had a problem with coming out the same day.

    Good luck xx

  • Thanks very much . I think I'll be in theatre by 9am so hopefully back on ward by midday. I'm going to pack an overnight bag and leave it at home just in case it needs grabbing for me.

  • I would take it along just in case, best to be prepared. Hope everything goes well and I certainly didn’t find it as bad as I feared.

    love Karen x

  • Hi Cakenport,

The questions/points you have raised are very similar to those I had.  I only joined this forum today, but I was also remember thinking that because of the risk of Covid, I'd want to be home asap.  Pretty much everyone has already covered what I would have suggested, but here's a quick summary, based on my experience:

    • Be honest with yourself and the nurses on the recovery and other ward about your pain levels.  You want to have them well controlled before  you get discharged.
    • If you have the mental energy, ask the nurse or healthcare assistant to tell you what your blood pressure, pulse and oxygen saturation levels are each time they come to take you.  In my case they kept me in a fraction longer to make sure these vital observations are stable and within what they consider to be a safe range.
    • If you really don't feel well in the evening/late afternoon of the day of your surgery, please do let your doctor, nurse, ward clerk know asap.  There's no need to feel pressured to go home the same day if you're not feeling up to it. Equally, you will probably want to go home the next day if possible, but don't feel pressured into being sent home at 8am.
    • On a practical level, I took an overnight bag with my favourite toiletries, and eye mask (airline style), plus my go-to earplugs.  If you don't have these, I am pretty confident that the ward staff are able to give you ear plugs these days, so please do ask them.

I really hope this helps.  Please do come back to me with any questions either tomorrow or in the first couple of days after your surgery.  Sending very warm wishes from the Suffolk coastxx

  • I was out the same day. Went in at 7 am and had surgery about 10 am. Bit sleepy in the afternoon but once surgeon had been round said I could go if I had been for a wee. They showed me how to self inject the blood thinners and released me around 8 pm. I took the advice of a cushion to protect my tummy from the seat belt. Good luck with your operation.
