Hysterectomy Day Case

Hi Everyone

I've just had a call from my Consultant re: my hysterectomy surgery on Friday. He seems very optimistic about it all and has let me know I'm first in bright and early (at least I know now I don't have to wait around!). He's also let me know that as I'll be going in so early I'm going to be coming home that night and treated as a day case (!!), as long as I have someone home with me. In his words, if I was staying in and having surgery later I'd get booted out at 8am anyway!

My thinking is the less time in hospital the better, of course. I'm less likely to get covid for one thing. And I'm sure they won't make me go home if there are any complications.

I've never heard of hysterectomy as an outpatient, though and I'm a bit dizzy now! I'm sure I'm in for a bit of a bumpy night and my husband is going to going to get an earful off me :/ Has anyone else had this and can you think of anything I should have on hand at home on Friday night?!

I know it's an odd one because my 2nd surgery I stayed overnight and the nurse took it out the next day.

There is certainly a variety to the procedures across the hospitals.

  • Hi Cakenport, no not at all. Three incisions - two on my tummy and one in my belly button. Stitched with dissolvable stitches with glue on top. Extremely neat and also dry! Also just to say there was a sanitary towel underneath me when I woke up, not attached to anything, and one spot of blood about little fingernail size, that’s all - I didn’t bleed any further, either then or when I got home, so I didn’t need any of the ones I’d bought specially!

  • Being brave and showing you pics of my incisions one day post op, complete with my spare tyres! As you can see there’s some bruising too. I just thought you might like to see. On the last pic the purple dot and bruising below is from the anti clotting injection post op.

  • I kind of feel the same but has a good point that it's not for the long term. I just feel like the Consultant would have mentioned it though if that was the case. He's been really thorough and open with me. Maybe he didn't mention it because he knew I'd say no to being a day case and they need the bed back!

  • I’m sure your CNS would find out for you if you gave them a call?

  • That's absolutely amazing. My last keyhole surgery was 20 years ago on my stomach and I basically had pouches of blood for weeks. It looked like I'd been butchered. You can barely see my scars from that surgery now and that's even neater.

  • I don't have a CNS. I can email or Whatsapp my consultant but I think I'll just wing it. It is what it is! I'll try my hardest to make them take it out before they boot me out.

  • Hi again, are you in the UK? If so then I’m pretty sure that your hospital will have a CNS team. It’s pretty standard to have Cancer Nurse Specialists for cancer patients to have extra support. I’d suggest checking as they can be invaluable for chasing results as well as for support.

  • Yes I'm in Dorset. I technically only have Complex Atypical Hyperplasia at the moment, so pre-cancer but they only biopsied my polyp. I've not had any scans either - they've just gone straight to hysterectomy.

  • <waves to Cakenport from New Milton as it’s not far away!> Aha! that makes sense - might still be worth an ask though if you can have their contact details especially as histology will be done on what they take out.
