Hello I got to go to Guys hospital tomorrow for a MDT meeting and for some reason I'm getting myself really worked up about it, I just don't know what to expect. I've got it in my mind I'm going to go in a room full of people who are going to judge me because im very overweight. I know they will mention weight loss surgery but I'm not in the right mind to go down that road at the moment can I tell them that?

Can someone please tell me what will happen at this meeting? I got diagnosed at the end of January but have not started any treatment yet

Sorry if I sound silly but I'm really dreading it

Linda

  • Hi Linda, you’re not being silly. We all dread the unknown don’t we! That’s why it’s good to talk on this forum, cos we all pass on as much info as we can to take the fear away.

Having said all that I can’t help with info about the MDT meeting!!  My op was in August 2020 and Covid was  still a big threat. I only saw the surgeon beforehand . After the op the histology results went before the MDT to discuss any further treatment if necessary. I opted to receive the histology results by phone as I live some distance from the hospital, and it was my surgeon who rang me.  . As you’ve had no treatment as yet I presume they are thinking of which path to go along. I think some ladies on here were given a coil to be going on with whilst they tried to get their weight down.

Don’t forget, they are all professionals who deal with people of all shapes, ages and sizes all the time. They are not in the business of judging people, they are working on solutions to make people well. And they are well aware that losing weight when you are feeling stressed out of your brain and fearful is not easy. Yes you can tell them how you feel, hopefully they will listen, and they will  advise you of the pros and cons of everything.

Try to think of any questions you have and write them down, take notebook and pen with you so you can record what’s said. Good luck!!

I completely agree with Linda's reply.  I had my op in Sept 17.  I knew my case would be discussed at a meeting but there was never any mention that I could attend.  Maybe things have changed or different hospitals work differently.  The only advice I can give is go prepared.  Write down all your thoughts and questions and dont be afraid to ask about anything you dont understand.

Stay strong and make the most of this opportunity.

  • I have never attended any of my mdt meetings so I can’t help you with that.  I was classed as a high risk for surgery because of my weight (was 168kg at the time) and they sent me for a breathing test and had a scan of my heart before they decided what to do and they said yes to surgery. X

    Hi Linda

I had my MDT 3 weeks ago. After all the professionals have had their meeting they phoned me and invitied myself and husband in the same day as the meeting. There was only the doctor and a nurse in the room. She went through what they had found and the procedure they wanted  to preform. They were both very nice and helpful.

Hope this helps settle your mind abit.

  • Thank you everyone I jus got it in my head I'm going to walk in the room and there is going to be a row of people sitting there. I feel a bit more at ease reading your lovely replies. I will let you know how I get on tomorrow xx

  • . Hi Linda I rather think you'll be attending a meeting to hear what the conclusions of the MDT have decided for your plan of treatment, not actually faced with a group of people. There'll be a surgeon who will explain what surgery they'll offer and usually you'll meet your CNS (Clinician Nurse Specialist). They won't judge you, we all come in different shapes and sizes so stop worrying on that point.

As Viv said take a notebook to write what they tell you or do as I did and ask permission to record the conversation on your phone.

    Big hugs, Barb xx
