Serous carcinoma

Hello to all you wonderful ladies.  I saw the oncologist yesterday who explained everything clearly to me-my cancer was caught at the earliest stage it could have been.  Any woman who has any amount of post menopausal bleeding should contact their GP immediately and should be put on the two week fast track to get a scan.  I thought that lymph nodes were ‘picked’ out but the apparently the surgeon takes out a channel of fat cells which should include several lymph nodes and although my surgeon took out a large sample only one lymph node from each side was found at the post op pathology.  Even so if the cancer cells had been low grade I probably wouldn't have needed any more treatment.  Due to the cells being high grade serous the oncologist recommends I have 6 sessions of chemo carboplatin and paclitaxel.  I am so sorry Barb that you weren’t offered chemo at the start-different health authorities seem to vary in the tests and treatment given.  I am now waiting for my chemo assessment, blood test which will include a cancer marker and a kidney function test.  Hugs to you all.   XX

  • Hi Walkinglady -

I am so pleased that you now have your treatment plan and can start the assessments ready for chemo soon.  I am on Day 11 of my first chemo cycle with the same drugs as you will be given and since Day 8 I have felt much better.  Day 3 - 8 I had similar side effects to those that others have reported - pains in my ankles and knees, pins and needles in feet and hands, feeling dizzy and generally quite rough - but I did not have sickness, thank goodness!  It was bearable!  Next cycle - if it follows the same pattern, I will feel reassured to know that I will hopefully start to feel a bit more normal around Day 8.

I do find it a bit worrying that oncologists have differing recommendations for similar situations.  I am also stage 1a, but grade 3 because part of my tumour was a very aggressive type.  My oncologist wants me to have just 4 cycles of paclitaxel and carboplatin!  I knew that most treatments seem to be 6 cycles, so I queried it - she said it would be enough.  Has anyone else been given just 4 cycles?  If I am going through all the ‘hassle’ of chemo, I would rather give it everything possible to have the best chance it works!  Oh well - we have to have confidence in their opinion.

I hope you do not have to wait too long for your chemo to start - good luck and take care x

  • Hi . Strange the way different health trusts operate! My Brachytherapy was optional as my lymph nodes and LVSI were both clear. In my opinion the grade 3 serous should have resulted in chemo , water under the bridge now!

Hugs back to you, Barb xx

  • Hi walkinglady

    I second that.

I have been told I have serous grade 3  and surgeon already advised me that I will be definitely having chemo and possibly brachytherapy.

you could ask why or get a second opinion.  I know it's water under the bridge but it's YOUR life and health at stake. Someone is accountable surely?

  • I have my chemo assessment next Thursday and suddenly it all seems very real.  I am struggling a bit at the moment. I am recovering so well after my operation now that the thought of having treatment which will make me feel ill again is very scary.  A part of me still hopes that someone will ring me up and say sorry we have given you the wrong results, you don’t have cancer!  I know that you will all understand how I feel. So many of you have been through and are going through treatment so my love goes out to you all.  XX

  • It is normal to feel like that, I was the same when I got told I am starting chemo it can all be overwhelming.  I have had two sessions of chemo and it hasn’t been as bad as I thought.  I know it is different for everyone but you may not feel as ill as you think, I had my second one Monday and not been too ill just a bit of pain in my feet and ankles.  We are all here for you x

Hi Maddy. I get what you're saying but TBH I'm needing to cope with how things are at the moment. Perhaps further down the line I'll make some waves. My Oncologist did say that it was very likely these other tumours weren't caused by my hysterectomy, that they were already in situ. Nobody would have been looking for tumours any where else on my CT scans/MRI scans, they were just looking at the womb.

In hindsight I do wish I'd stayed with both my Oncologist and Gynae Consultant rather than just gynae 3 months after my Brachytherapy. I feel if I'd brought up my concerns with my Oncologist he would've acted quicker. I was mostly reassured that it was 99.99% impossible to return in the womb, which once it's gone , it's gone.

Had my CT scan on Thursday so hopefully, news will be good.

    Hugs, Barb xx

  • Hello MRSBJH

of course you have enough to be getting on with and also the decision about treatment options isn't made on a whim. It is made by a team of highly skilled professionals with a plan for the best outcome for you in the long run. It just seems that chemotherapy should have been an option due to the grade even if it was for belt and braces.

You must now concentrate on getting through the treatments and staying your healthiest best.

I'm sending positive energy and my bestest wishes for your recovery Heart
