I saw my consultant/surgeon today and he gave me my date for my op - Saturday 22nd January - so 3 weeks tomorrow! I’m so please and even a bit excited! A bit anxious too of course, but getting an actual date has given me a boost.

Here’s my story:

September 14th - GP appointment for slight spotting 8 years post menopause; referred on 2 week fast track (Southampton)

September 21st - external and internal ultrasound, uterus lining noted at 8mm (should be no more than 4mm post menopause), referred for hysteroscopy and biopsy

September 28th - hysteroscopy attempted in outpatients; failed. Referred for hysteroscopy under GA

October 14th - pre assessment by nurse for hysteroscopy

November 3rd - hysteroscopy and biopsy under GA

November 19th - results by phone that I have cancer, grade 1: told I need MRI and chest x ray so it can be staged

November 23rd - MRI and chest X ray

November 24th - phone call from specialist nurse team to tell me I am to have a face to face appointment in two days’ time

November 26th - face to face appointment with consultant who told me it had been staged at 1A, and that he was 90% sure that a hysterectomy would be sufficient without any other treatment, but that he wouldn’t be 100% sure till after the hysterectomy

December 15th - pre assessment for hysterectomy including ECG, MRSA swabs and blood test

December 31st - face to face appointment with new consultant (my original one is on leave) who gave me a date for my hysterectomy of Saturday 22nd January. The hospital have opened up some weekend appointments to help them get through the waiting list.. The plan is for a laparoscopic hysterectomy under GA, in at 7.30am, 45 minute op, overnight stay and home after 11am the following day. He was lovely, understanding, listened to me and answered my questions. He echoed what my original consultant said, that the area was tiny and that they’re hopeful this will completely sort it. I’m hopeful too, but will have to wait and see.

I’ve bought some granny knickers 2 sizes too big, and will throw them away afterwards. Have also bought a litter picker for picking things up off the floor! Have just ordered a long charging lead for my iPad, already have a wireless charger for my phone (Xmas present). Got my own snacks to take in, also peppermint tea, my instant lemon tea, a couple of puzzle books, facial wipes, slippers, dressing gown, peppermints, pads, Oh and a little pillow to cushion my stomach from the seat belt on the way home. Reckon I’m almost there.

So all I will need now is a PCR and then a further blood test 3 days pre op. Praying that my consultant and the staff stay well and that the appointment goes ahead! If anyone has any questions please feel free to ask.

  • So glad that you have a date - all the waiting for appointments, dates, then results is the most stressful part and once you get a date you can start to plan.  You sound very organised - I would add an eye mask and ear plugs to your list, as it can be quite noisy at night when the nurse checks everyone’s blood pressure and catheter lines.  Fingers crossed that you do not get any delays - although I was anxious, once I had the diagnosis I just wanted it out Four leaf clover

  • My story is similar although I haven't had any bleeding. Was picked up through CA-125 blood test (because I was bloated and gassy indicating a problem with my ovaries) which came back slightly high at 39. Should be below 34. Fast tracked for external & internal scan. Ovaries okay which was a relief but endometrial thickness measured at 18mm. So then hysteroscopy with a consultant who was very laid back and seemed unbothered. Quite traumatic as couldn't get through cervix as I have already gone through menopause 3 years ago. They tried for ages and had local anaesthetic into cervix all of which was unpleasant. So sent for MRI (Tip- wear an eye mask and take a cd with you as they can play it through the headphones and you wont know when you enter the tunnel) New consultant, much nicer said that womb thickness is actually 15mm. He offered hysteroscopy under GA but recommended hysterectomy. After tests taking two months and waiting which has been the worst most stressful part I jumped at the chance to have a hysterectomy rather than do 2 procedures. I feel calmer since seeing him and now having a plan of action and just want it over with. Feeling anxious my husband can't come in with me or see me afterwards because of covid but in a couple of weeks it will be over and hopefully done and have a phone consultation with hospital psychotherapist next week to see how they can support me when I come to the hospital. Everyone apart from the first consultant that I have met have been really lovely and reassuring. I don't know yet whether its cancer or benign as didn't have the hysteroscopy and strangely not worried about that as just focussing on getting past the operation and recovery. Wishing you all the best XXX

  • Thank you GwenDot - I saw a post of yours last night and added an eye mask to my list! I will add ear plugs too! I’m interested in the difference I feel mentally now that I have an actual date. I have to be there at 7.30am (was the same for my hysteroscopy so I know the routine, and the ward!) so I’m just about to book my taxi too. My husband would take me but it’s so early (we live 45-60 mins away) and we have a dog who’d be bewildered to be left at that time of day, so I’m going to be getting a taxi as I did to my hysteroscopy and then my husband will pick me up hopefully the next day.
