Hysteroscopy Referral

Hey everyone, I'm new here and so fed up and cross.

I saw a gynaecologist 8 days ago after previously seeing one and having an inconclusive biopsy.  She was unable to perform a biopsy at all so promised me she'd do a referral for a scan and hysteroscopy and that I wouldn't be waiting long.  My letter came today and my date is the 10th March 2022! 5 months!!

My mum had womb cancer which my GP and gynae know, I've lost 2 stone, have very over regular periods <21 days, am anaemic, hair loss, lethargy, pelvic pain, lower back pain and now severe joint pain. I know I'm not well but I need to know what I'm dealing with. I'm 45, a single mum (one of my daughters has additional needs) and I feel like I'm being fobbed off because I'm "young".

By the time my appointment comes round it will be a year since I started having tests (cervical cancer, ovarian cancer, blood tests, menopause tests, sti tests - all perfectly fine).

Should I push my GP/gynae to get me a date sooner or should I just sit in a & e and refuse to move until I have answers. I honestly can't go on much longer feeling how I do.

Thank you for reading, I didn't know where else to go!

  • Hello TattyAngel.  What a frustrating situation for you.  Here's a few ideas - although perhaps you have already thought of these.

Contact your GP again and tell them how far away your appointment is and how concerned you are about that.

Contact your gynaecologist or their secretary and ask if they are aware that your new appointment is so far in the future.  Can they bring it forward?

Those suggestions are because the timing of it may have been an admin/clerical error.

If these conversations don't resolve it, speak to PALS at the hospital and ask their advice. Can anyone explain why there is such a long wait?

Could you ask for a second opinion?  Could your GP refer you to a different hospital perhaps with shorter waiting times?

Are you having the hysteroscopy under anaesthetic? Some are able to tolerate hysteroscopy awake and some are not. (It's not a competition). You can request anaesthetic, at least a discussion to see if it is suitable.

It is so annoying to receive a letter like that at the weekend when there is nobody to phone up and speak to about it. The hospital I was treated at claimed to have a policy of not sending you letters at the weekend, but they did it to me 2 or 3 times. Before phoning up to enquire, make a note of what you want to say and what you want to get out of the conversation. e.g. I don't understand why this is so taking so long after Dr so-and-so told me it wouldn't. What I want is to be seen sooner.

Good luck.  I hope you get some answers soon. LR.

  • Hi,

I agree with Little Runner. There must be some clerical mistake. I'd chase it up.

My husband is currently in hospital. Last Friday I received a letter for him saying he needed to hand in a sample bottle! I knew he handed one in on Wednesday. When I checked the letter it was dated the Tuesday beforehand!! I rang up to sort it out. A case of one hand doesn't know what the other is doing!

  • Hi I'm surprised at the dates here because usually a GP refers you under what's known as a 2 week wait cancer pathway if they suspect there's cancer and given your family history together with the symptoms you describe should make you a candidate. I naively thought it'd be two weeks of tests followed by seeing the consultant in two weeks whereas in reality it was more like 10 weeks as it was bang in the middle of Covid lockdown.

As for age that's irrelevant to this particular cancer. It used to be thought to be post menopausal women related but it also appears in younger ladies.

I would go back to your GP and ask to be put on the two weeks wait cancer pathway or seek a second opinion.

Take a little comfort in the fact our cancer is a slow growing cancer but nevertheless needs to be treated.

It’s always helpful to others if you write a little something (or a lot) about yourself and your journey to date. You can enter it into your profile (click on your username and select “Profile”) It’s helpful to other members with a similar diagnosis who can then hopefully answer your questions. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. You can amend or update it at any time. If you’re not sure what to write, just click on my username.

Come back and let us know how you get on.

    Sending hugs, Barb xx

    Hi.

I went to the doctor with abnormal bleeding got referred straight yo hospital. I had scans then had hysteroscopy same day as endometrial lining was thicker than it should be. I agree pain relief is a must for that procedure I didn't get offered any and it was like being in labour. I was told straight after whilst on my own I had womb cancer I needed an mri to see if it had spread and would need a full hysterectomy. That was July 9th .I had mri then needed ct scan. Waiting for results is a night mare. I was diagnosed with stage 1 and had my laproscopic hysterectomy on 16th September 2021. So with in 3 months this all happened and that was stage 1. Like you say you need answers and March is too far away if you do have cancer it needs to be assessed. Lucky for me my results came back and I don't need any further treatment. The key is get it early as possible. I do hope you get sorted. Take care. AJ x

Thank you all so much for your advice, time and compassion.

I've spoken to my GP who was flabbergasted, the gynae had done an urgent referral however, because I'm not post menopausal or over 55 was unable to use the cancer pathway Rolling eyes My GP has done another urgent referral with notes and if it is not within 4 weeks I am to call back and she will fight on my behalf.

    Keeping everything crossed!
