Feeling really down

I've now had 8 sessions of adjuvant radiotherapy - 17 to go, then 2 sessions of Brachytherapy. What joy!

I'm having to stay in Athens (I live in Crete) as this is where I had my surgery, and the only place I can get the treatment now. I'm home this weekend, but go back tomorrow.

Feeling really shattered. Nauseous, and struggling with the very limited diet suggested, and have now started getting diarrhea. Just feel really low - I hate being away from home at the best of times.

Just needing to vent a bit!

  • Hi Sorry to hear you are feeling low with your radiotherapy treatments.  I had the same as you will be, 25 radiotherapy plus 2 brachytherapy.  My side effects started on day 3 with nausea and upset stomach.  I had a 5 hour round trip to the hospital each morning by car as I can't use public transport, and I was exhausted (I have other health conditions with fatigue too).  The meds from the hospital helped a bit.  I made a chart and crossed off each day as I went along which helped me to see that I was getting nearer the end of the treatments.  It's a time when we have to look after ourselves, rest loads and drink plenty of water.  I cut out coffee and ate smaller meals, not much fibre and  had some treats and things I fancied now and then.  Before you know it you will have finished.

  • Hi . Sorry to hear you're finding your radiotherapy hard going. Be positive you're a third of the way through, easy for me to say as I was lucky and got away with just 3 Brachytherapy sessions. I did suffer with diarrhoea though and taking Immodium helped.

It's also hard being away from home at times like this. A friend of mine who used to live on the Isle of Wight had to have 5 weeks of treatment in Southampton, jut across the water. You could almost see the hospital from the ferry terminal but a daily journey was too much so she ended up staying in a hotel. Being away from her family was really hard but her hubby and kids managed and when she got home she was spoilt rotten!

Have a word with your radiotherapy nurse and see if they can offer any advice.

    Sending hugs, Barb x
