Hello, i had total hysterectomy 5 months ago, and was diagnosed with grade1 stage 1a adenocarcinoma. So thankfully, i believe, it was caught early. I have a question about hrt. Although 59, i believe menopause only began about a yr or 18 months ago according to my gp. Didnt really notice much at the time, but i sure do now. Ive had a number of UTIs lately, and my GP diagnosed vaginal atrophy and prescribed vagifem, a local oestrogen pessary to be used vaginally twice a week. However, when i went to the chemist with the prescription, she advised me against using it and said it could cause the cancer to return! So im terrified to touch it now! Im guessing if local oestrogen is a no-no ill have to rethink my plan of maybe going to see a menopause specialist about actually getting hrt patch as i suppose thats off the cards now as well. Has anyone used vagifem or indeed hrt patches? Thanks for any advice.

  • Hi Ao62 welcome to the forum. I was prescribed this before my Breast Cancer and when I was diagnosed I was told to stop it immediately as my Breast Cancer was Oestrogen Positive.

I would be tempted to call the until where you had your Op and ask them about this but I'm sure one of the lovely folks on here may have more info they can give you about this. xxx

  • Hi Ao62,1 started HRT AT AGE OF ABOUT 53/54,now 66 and diagnosed with hormonal breast cancer,in others words oestrogen from HRT didn,t help and is probably the cause,I was on it a long time though.Of course came off it as quick as you can say Jack Flash once diagnosed, think your chemist might be right.I had the patches plus one tablet a day of progesterone,I don,t think you can have the patches because of your hysterectomy, but there are tablets to take, deffo double check about this before you take anything,I thought HRT was wonderful, and was for me,but now would sit on the fence with ref to how long you can take it for,Dr,s always want you off it by the time you are of a certain age anyway.

interested to know how you get on.

  • Hi @Ao62. I agree with and call your CNS for clarification. Our cancer is hormone - Oestrogen - fed. We're not medical experts but warning bells went off in my head! Thank goodness your Pharmacist noticed and brought it to your attention!

    Big hugs, Barb x

  • I was diagnosed with vaginal atrophy about a year ago and prescribed vagifem. My main symptoms were itching and continence problems. It really helped but I needed to use it every day. My GP said it was fine to do so as contained less oestrogen per year than the daily contraceptive pill. When I was examined by the consultant at the hospital she said that the vagifem may have caused the cancer to grow. I stopped using immediately but oddly the itching and continence problems didn't return! When the surgeon checked my vagina to see if a laparoscopic hysterectomy could be done she said that my vagina was too tight!!! So I had to have an open surgery.

  • I was prescribed Vagifem by my GP who said I had 'hormonal changes' in the vagina, after a failed smear test and a pelvic exam following a transvaginal USS for post menopausal bleeding [caused i think by oral HRT tablets], so i wasn't thrilled about being prescribed pessaries , but I'm giving them a go, I have noticed a small amount of discharge since using the pessaries, been using them for about 10 days now, [i have to use thejm once a day for 2 weeks then twice a week for four weeks; gp said to book my smear after this. Is it normal to have vaginal discharge with pessaries? My USS came back clear thank goodness and although GP couldnt do smear [she couldnt get speculum in far enough because it was too painful] she couldnt feel anything abnormal around the cervix, which I was v relieved about and of course the USS scan was clear, also a huge relief! I had some pelvic discomfort the past day or so, a bit like mild cramps but no bleeding

    thanks in advance xx

  • I was prescribed vagifem due to vaginal attrophy.about 10 months later I was diagnosed with leiomyosarcoma. A very rare and aggressive cancer inside a fibroid. The gynae doctor said that the vagifem could have made things progress. I would take advice if I were you. Deb

  • thanks Deb, I will phone my GP and let her know, see what she has to say
