I had an open, total hysterectomy 4 weeks ago. I have leiomyosarcoma which is a very rare and aggressive cancer. I had an abdominal CT which was clear and I am having a chest CT on Saturday to check for any spread and I'm seeing a sarcoma consultant at the Christie hospital in Manchester at the beginning of September.
My problem is that every time I eat I can only manage a couple of bites and don't have any appetite anyway. I have lost over 16lb since the op. I am overweight so it isn't too serious but I feel exhausted and light headed. Within an hour of eating I have horrendous diarrhoea and I am doubled over in pain. I have non alcoholic cirrhosis of the liver and don't take painkillers as they cause damage to the liver but I'm having to take codeine and use hot water bottles on my back and stomach. I'm worried that I won't ever be able to eat proper food again. Has anyone gone on to be unable to eat after a hysterectomy?. I can occasionally manage a single piece of toast but not eating proper food isn't good for my liver or type 2 diabetes.
Any advice would be welcomed. Deb
Hi Deborino It has taken me almost 6 weeks to start eating even a restrictive diet due to pain and diarrhoea and I had my surgery laparoscopy with 5 small cuts across the top of my stomach on 8th July. I found grazing through the day helped even when i didn't feel hungry. and avoid anything wheat based or basically anything considered as roughage. I was surprised by the diet info as anything I used to consider as 'Good for your bowels' is a no go ..I virtually lived on yogurts with soft fruit in for days.. high protein like salmon, and the inside of jacket potato ( not the skin ) I used to hate eggs but i can now eat a one egg cheese omelette. ! My pain eased a few days ago but, l still have diarrhoea, today is the first day there is a sign it's just starting to ease slightly....
I hope you start to feel better soon, Take Care x x x
Thanks Janet. I tried to find information about bowel issues after a hysterectomy but it was all about constipation rather than the opposite! The lack of appetite makes it even harder to face food. I'll try yogurt today. Like you I don't like eggs and at the moment just the thought of them turns my stomach. We're going away next week and taking our two grandsons and daughter. We booked the holiday long before my diagnosis but I thought that I would be feeling much better by now. We will be eating out but goodness knows what I'll be able to eat.
Hello. I had a laparoscopic hysterectomy over 5 months ago now, but similarly im having bowel issues. I still have appetite, but after eating i have excruciating pain followed by diorrhea. Nannyjanet thanks for your post as ive been eating things that i thought were good for the bowel ie high fibre, i will try yoghurt and soft fruit to see how i go. My GP simply said that its a big surgery and the bowels need to settle back down, but i dunno, its becoming an issue for me at this stage. Supposed to be going on a family holiday next week, which ill grin and bare for the kids sake, but itll involve a lot of car journeys which i dread. Really expected to feel better than this 5 months out, but we all heal differently i guess!
Hi , Deborino nannyjanet
Just found this reading material about eating problems - might be helpful.
