Hi,

I had a uterus biopsy 2 weeks ago as I had an abnormal bleed (I'm 60). It wasn't for long, about 5-10 minutes, wasn't heavy but came with the old period pains I used to get.

I was told at the biopsy that results can take 3 weeks, after 2 weeks I recevied a call saying I had a 2nd appointment to discuss my results for this Friday May 7th. so 2 weeks after the biopsy. Today I have received a call to say that the gynecology department have referred me for an MRI scan which is also this Friday. None of the departments will discuss anything over the phone so I waswondering if anyone can help me with what the chances are I have cancer? I have no other symptons and have only had the one bleed. I am scared to the point that I cannot talk to anyone as I am really tearful so thought maybe someone on here could help with maybe what the chances are of this being cancer seeing as I have been called back within 2 weeks.  Sorry if I am rambling and sorry that my question isn't as important as those of you who have been diagnosed, I just don't know who else to ask.

Thank you.

  • Hello

Please don’t apologize - of course your question is important!  I think we’d all agree that the times of unknowing and waiting for results are the worst of all.  It’s impossible really to say whether or not you may have cancer, as there are so many other conditions that can cause post menopausal bleeding.  All I can say is that if it does turn out to be cancer, the fact that you have been examined and had tests so quickly is really positive.  Everything is happening as it should and you will be well looked after, whatever it turns out to be.

I had endometrial cancer, diagnosed last August, but didn’t have surgery until December because of covid.  Nonetheless, it was successfully removed by hysterectomy and I am now deemed to be cured.  When caught early this cancer has very positive outcomes.  I know it’s useless to tell you not to worry, and I can imagine just how terrified you’re feeling right now, but once you know what you’re dealing with - cancer or not - there will be a plan and everything will be done to look after you and to get you better.  Just take deep breaths and get through the next couple of days.  And ask any questions you want - someone on here will know the answer!!!

Thinking of you and sending strength through the ether.

    Take care

  • Hello Mamaden, first of all welcome to this forum, where you will get lots of help and support. Even if this turns out to be something else, you are feeling as scared as we all did at this point. Basically, if you are post menopausal and have a bleed you are usually put on a two week pathway, to be examined and have scans etc. The fact this is happening so quickly is a good thing, as the sooner you are examined then the sooner you will know what you are dealing with. As Pippa said, everything is happening as it should.

I am 69 and was diagnosed last July and within a month had had my hysterectomy. I have recovered well, I had three sessions of internal radiotherapy and have just had my six month check and all is well. Even if this turns out to be cancer, you are being seen very quickly and womb cancer is one of the cancers that can have very successful outcomes. Please try not to worry yourself into a state trying to second guess the results of your tests. Whatever the outcomes we all manage to deal with it, it’s just the not knowing which puts us all into a state of terror. You don’t have long to wait before you will get some answers, so just hang on in there, and we will all keep our fingers crossed for you,

  • Hi and a warm welcome to our corner of the online community.

I agree completely with what both Pippa and Viv have written. The speed with which everyone's reacting is normal but frightening as hell for us the patient! There's a lot of of lovely ladies here who have been exactly where you are now, tearful, fearful and in a state of shock but we're here to help you get through this. We're all just starting, in the middle of or at the end of this very stressful rollercoaster of a journey.

I just had a few pink spots on my undies a few days after my 67th Birthday, no other problems, post menopausal. I was diagnosed August, had Laparascopic (keyhole) hysterectomy in September and like Viv just 3 x sessions internal radiotherapy. Also just had 6 month check-up and all's ok. A distant memory now!

Things will be clearer after you meet with your Gynae team tomorrow. They'll have a lot of answers for you so take a notebook with you. After come back and ask us any questions, no matter if you think them silly, someone will be able to help you!

It’s always helpful to others if you write a little something (or a lot) about yourself and your journey to date. You can enter it into your profile (click on your username and select “Profile”) It’s helpful to other members with a similar diagnosis who can then hopefully answer your questions. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. You can amend or update it at any time. If you’re not sure what to write, just click on my username.

It might also be a good idea to download this booklet Understanding Womb (Endometrial) Cancer I found it invaluable in my journey.

It’s always good to talk and the Macmillan Support Services provides lots of information, support, financial guidance or just a listening ear. It's free to call on 0808 808 00 00  8am to 8pm, 7 days a week. Have a look to see what is available by Clicking here .

There is also an Ask an Expert section, but you should allow two working days for replies from our expert team.

  • Thank you all for your replies. I saw my gynaecologist & my womb lining has changes & hes 98% sure it’s cancerous. I also had the MRI scan & have been told I will have a hysterectomy within 4 weeks. I’m scared but confident that it’ll be ok. My friends have taken me away for the weekend so I’ll check back in with you all on Monday as I do have questions. Thank you again x

    Hi Mamaden,

I just want you to know I am thinking about you! I, too, was diagnosed with endometrial cancer after postmenopausal bleeding. It was caught so early that it didn't even show up on the MRI...only in the polyp that was removed/biopsied. I had my hysterectomy 12 days ago and am recovering well. You are not alone--cancer is scary. But please know you are not alone. If it helps, I am feeling so much better every day. I am waiting for test results again but am keeping myself busy, breathing and reminding myself not to worry...concentrate on facts. You are in good hands, that's for sure! I hope you have a good weekend with your friends. Two women holding handsTwo women holding hands

  • Hi, Mamaden

I’m sorry to hear your diagnosis but it does sound like your team has done everything right.

I work in hospital Imaging (the department includes x-ray, CT, MRI, ultrasound etc).

Early in 2018, I was diagnosed with StageIB endometrial cancer. I was operated on a few weeks later and did not require any further treatment.

I have been fine ever since. It can often turn out to be OK. I know you will hear and read stories of those less fortunate, but modern care and surgery can and died often lead to a favourable outcome, especially with this type of cancer.

I wish you all the very best.

    Lots of love and hugs
