Hi all, I’ve just had my first three monthly check up. I had my total hysterectomy at the end of August and three sessions of brachytherapy, last one November 3rd. I have recovered well so far. I was a bit surprised when they said it was going to be a telephone consultation, and asked why. They said it was a combination of feeling that my outlook was very good and also not wanting to bring people in to hospital because of Covid.
It was a fairly brief conversation with a doctor I haven’t met. She asked how I was, did I have any problems etc asked me if I had any questions and everything was ok. The topic of dilators came up, I expressed surprise I hadn’t heard anything about them yet but she said they don’t usually start with them til this first check up. I know other ladies on the forum started with them pretty soon after brachytherapy. Just shows all hospitals have their own methods.
So, all seems good, and seems I have nothing much to worry about! Dilators should be in the post soon! (OK, perhaps I have got something to worry about then lol,)
I hope everyone else is doing OK on their own journeys,
Viv
Hi Bella, fingers crossed for you that your surgeon can give you a date soon. Normally it all happens quickly, but Covid has certainly thrown a number of spanner’s in the works. Try to hang on in there and not worry too much ( waste of breath saying that cos we all worry ourselves sick!). Once you get a date you will feel better that things are moving. I am just so grateful that mine was discovered in the summer when the NHS wasn’t so overrun. Wishing you all the very best.
Viv
Hi Jigsaw33 Be thankful your dilators are coming in the post! I suffered a very humiliating experience where I had a face to face chat with a nurse who then went on to demonstrate on me how to use the dilators and then asked if I would like to have a go! I politely declined and said I would manage at home!! I found it more embarrassing than any of the other procedures I had endured!!
Hugs, Lesley xx
Oh dear Lesley! That did make me laugh tho. Some staff are more thorough than others it would seem!
I assumed it was standard procedure but nobody else has said it happened to them!! I can laugh about it now but I didn't at the time!
Hi Viv
Strange isn't it how different hospitals work to different regimes?. I had an internal exam before my first brachytherapy to make sure everything was healing well. Maybe because I'd spoken to my CNS about the odd pink smear on tissue that she got me in to have my first post op 3 monthly check face to face with my consultant who said everything was fine but if the pink increased to contact immediately. I do have the pinky smears normally after using the dilators (or should I admit to the buzzy toys which are much more fun! LOL)
I was give my dilators at my second session and told to start using them 2 weeks after I'd finished brachy. The idea is to keep the vagina stretched to enable internals to be easier. I must admit my internal was easier than it used to be - must be due to the battery powered options.
Oh Poppysmum27 I did laugh when I read you'd refused the opportunity to try out the dilators!
Stay safe everyone, I haven't been on so much as I've had to sort a family bereavement. Knowing how broken my brother-in-law is has made me so aware of how much I want to say "onwards and upwards"
Big hugs to you all, Barb xx
