Abdominal Hysterectomy

Hello again, i was diagnosed before Christmas with Grade 1 endometrial cancer. After an MRI scan it showed I had an abnormal mass/cyst on my right ovary and the other ovary didn’t look quite normal. They are not sure either way if this is the same cancer that has spread to the ovaries, ovarian cancer at the same time or if they are just cysts. I had a CT scan which showed no further spread and it looked like the cancer in the uterus had not spread much into the muscle wall and no sign of any lymph node involvement. I have just been told today that I am no longer having keyhole surgery as expected. They said I will be having abdominal surgery due to the questionable ovaries. They said they would need to take more out. I have never had an operation before and I had just about got my head around having keyhole surgery but now it is going to be a much bigger operation and will have to stay in hospital longer. The nurse said they needed to do it this way so they could get a real good look inside. I am still waiting to get an appointment to see a consultant to explain everything before surgery. They are expecting the surgery to be beginning of February unless I am called in before. Has anyone else had this kind of surgery? Really anxious about everything again today.  Thanks so much xx

  • Hi Bella hope your ok I didn’t have that surgey but there are plenty of women who did it on here xxx

  • Hi Natalie, I’m not doing too bad thank you. Was really anxious earlier when the nurse said it would be open surgery. I was so relieved after the CT scan results but I’m now back to really worrying about the ovaries now. She did say though they are still not sure if they are cancerous or not so really trying to think positively. I think they are now taking lymph nodes etc to check them which is all a bit scary. I’m sure it must be routine to check but i feel like I’m in limbo still waiting to find out it’s much worse than first expected. I hope you are feeling okay xxx

  • Glad to hear your ok when is your next meeting? Fingers crossed on the ovaries being just cysts! The op it’s self will be scary for you but you will be strong enough to do it it’s all for you this treatment so you go on to lead a happy cancer free life.I don’t know when we will get past this but we do  then we will look back and realise how strong and  brave we are. Am doing go physically, mentally not do good hopefully that will change as time passes xxx

  • They haven’t given me a date. They said as soon as one comes available in the clinic they will let me know. I really hope when I finally meet the consultant he will reassure me. I can’t seem to think about anything else at the minute and daren’t think or plan anything for this year because I don’t know if I will need extra treatment or not. It’s like I’m frozen in time if that makes sense. You are right though after some time we will both be looking back on these hard times realising how brave we were and how far we have come. Really hope your anxieties start to settle soon there is nothing worse than our own minds. I am hoping that the further away this ordeal gets the less amount of time we spend worrying about it xx

  • The consultant will reassure you they really are brilliant and once they give u a plan it changes ur mind set and u prepare your self. I am still frozen in time even more so With the lockdown nothing is the same I have no routine so my mind is in overtime.as for treatment after they really won’t no that untill the histology report is back and then they will let u no fingers crossed Fingers crossed surgey is the only treatment for you but If not u will be strong enough to get thew it all and come out the other side. Thinking of you stay safe and keep busy u will get there xx

  • I had an abdominal hysterectomy and ovaries and fallopian tubes taken.  Glad op wound clips have been removed now.  Got to wear pressure socks for the whole 6 week recovery period but they can be taken off for showering.  I’m on a course of 28 injections to stop blood clots now.  My op was 30 December and I’m doing ok.

  • Thank you so much for replying. Could I ask how long you had to stay in hospital for and what you took into hospital? I have never had an operation before. Did they take any lymph nodes at all? I think they have said they are taking some of mine even though they look clear on scans xx

  • Hello

i didn’t have an abdominal hysterectomy - I had keyhole - but a lady in the next bed to me was abdominal and she was in for three nights.  She had been told that some people stay for three and some people go home after two, depending on how they were feeling etc. I had 18 lymph nodes removed with my hysterectomy.

Really thinking of you and hope you get a date soon xx

  • Hi Bella, it is quite scary going into hospital for the first time, let alone having the op. Some things to think about taking in with you, definitely your phone and charger, especially as no visitors are allowed at the moment. Maybe a few of your fave snacks in case you don’t like hospital food, like wise some squash if you want a change from drinking water and tea. Something loose around the waist to wear home, as your tummy might be a bit sore or tender, and, for the same reason, some roomy knickers!. Some slippers and your nightie if you don’t want the hospital ones which are open at the back and inevitably lead to inadvertent  "flashing". Maybe a book, or kindle.

When I had my op in August I was taken to a waiting area first where I got undressed, then I walked down to the theatre with a nurse. All my stuff, which was in a bag, was taken by the nurses so that it could go to the ward whilst I was having my op.  All hospitals have their own ways of doing things, but if you are unsure of anything just ask them, they are all really kind and used to dealing with people who are feeling very nervous! Hope this is of some help, and try not to worry - but we all know what it’s like!  Hope it all goes well for you,

    Viv

  • I was in hospital from 30 December 2020 to 3 January 2021.  My surgeon said I would be in for between 2 and 4 days.  I took dressing gown, slippers that I used and toiletries I needed.  I took a couple of changes of clothes because my surgeon said I had to be able to get dressed and sit in a chair before they would discharge me but I wasn’t required to dress each day.  Very important to take something to amuse yourself otherwise it’s very boring.  I took my kindle.  I actually don’t know if lymph nodes were taken or not but may well have been as the surgeon found a nodule in my stomach during my operation that’s cancerous and my consultation with her centred on that.  Feel free to ask me anything else you want to know.
